Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer ERJ-190AR 4K-AZ65 crashed near Aktau Airport,Kazakhstan, after having declared an emergency. 38 people are reported to have died.
There are unconfirmed reports that the aircraft was fired on from the ground, certainly some images supposedly taken of the wreckage would seem to suggest this as a possibility.

The holes and damage could be a result of engine failure, and bits being ejected through the engine into the body of the aircraft, but we don't see that in the videos.
As far as I can tell,it doesn't look as if the aircraft is under any control - possibly hypoxia and the aircraft just fell out of the sky.

The flightdata from FR24 is very alarming. The CVR should clear it up.

Saw some videos from inside before and after the crash. Thankfully there are quite a few survivors. One of the pods under the wing looked to have a massive hole in it before the crash happened.

Passengers were alert and recording and talking right up to the crash by the looks of the video.

There's been more videos I have saw with passengers showing damage to the left wing and puncture holes in the fuselage with a woman with injuries to her leg. Also a video showing one passengers life vest with a hole in it.  But I see Russia are now on telling people not to point fingers atm. It was reported by a Russian news outlet it was a birdstrike. I saw the puncture marked on what looks to be the tail fin which I'd be surprised if any engine explosion would cause damage like that.

After watching the clips a few times, I don`t think it was an engine failure, I can`t see any smoke from either engine, so that does make it look more likely that it may have been fired on.
If that is the case, and it was hit at above 12000ft, that could cause cabin decompression, hence the O2 masks dropping.
I`m no ballistics expert, but the damage could be from an air burst missile--all very sinister.

The ABC News report isn't really saying anything new,it does look almost certain the aircraft was fired on, either by accident or deliberately, but nothing has officially been announced just yet.
As I mentioned previously the cockpit voice recorder should hold the answer.

The Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsiya) stated that during that morning the situation in the area of Grozny airport was 'very difficult'.
At that time, Ukrainian military drones were reported to be carrying out attacks in the cities of Grozny and Vladikavkaz.
Rosaviatsiya states that the airspace was closed as a result, without stating the timeframe of the closure in relation to flight 8243.
