It appears many of us appreciate contrail photography, as lets be honest, its the closest many of us can get to the larger and unusual aircraft. So post your contrail photos here :)
-
I'll throw a few out first;

Air Tahiti Nui A340-300, was happy to see this :)

Lufthansa 747-400

We seem to get a lot of Lufthansa/KLM/BA traffic overhead so a good variety of aircraft types.
-
One from today. Unsure of type or operator :(
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Thats a 777-200ER for sure although likewise, I'm unsure of the operator :-X
Given the blue tail, it is likely Continental as there are few 777 operators with blue tails operating around Europe :)
Nice catch, today we had some awesome clear weather for contrails.
-
I would say I had in the region of 15 to 20 pass over today - that I saw.
-
Working in the garden today but didn't get a chance to take in as many fly overs as I would have liked, but here's a few.
-
Nice one, you got the shots pretty well exposed! I read recently that its best to under exposure the shots in order to get the correct exposure for the aircraft and contrail. First shot looks like a Lufthansa A330, second shot is a 767 but no idea about the airline, and you no doubt know the third :)
-
I read recently that its best to under exposure the shots in order to get the correct exposure for the aircraft and contrail.
I think that's the case for most photos. As far as I know it's easier to fix an underexposed photo than an overexposed one (if shooting in RAW).
-
That's true although given the distance, it's harder to get the aircraft correctly exposed for contrail shots. I had always used normal settings but in the future I think I will be stopping down.
-
Caught this yesterday afternoon with my camcorder.

-
Caught this 747 over Lurgan today around 20:30
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Nice one. Great spot.
Who owns it.
-
Caught this yesterday afternoon with my camcorder.
Looks like a 773ER meaning it would be Air France :)
Caught this 747 over Lurgan today around 20:30
Nice one! As to who owns it, I have absolutely no idea! From first glances I have no idea who owns it.
-
Caught this 747 over Lurgan today around 20:30
Think it could be a Global Supply Systems 747F, who operate for BA.
-
Think it could be a Global Supply Systems 747F, who operate for BA.
Looking at other pictures I think you're correct. They operate 3 of them, along with 90 pilots ??? ???
-
Here is a small video of some planes today
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Looks like you saw a good few contrails today strings ;D
Two I caught today whilst burning myself in the sun in the back garden.
Air France A330-200
(http://www.jetphotos.net/img/1/2/3/9/91810_1243701932.jpg)
Air Canada 767-300
(http://www.jetphotos.net/img/1/4/6/0/36756_1243702064.jpg)
Air Canada starts operating to Dublin around the 18th of June so i can't wait to head down there and catch it sometime, even if it is only with the 767's. Air Transpat also operate the A310 into Dublin currently.
-
Had a lot of 4 engined jobs flying over but didn't catch any on camera. Particularly regret not catching a lufthansa A340 >:( >:( >:(
-
Ahh the Lufthansa A340's are great to look at ;D
Some more from today following another burning session in the back garden;
BA 747-400 with a 5th trail.
The effects a minute after the BA 747 had flown past. The vortices shed from the wing effect the contrail in a fascinating way.
And two Three-holers flew over which made a nice change! ;D
KLM MD-11 heading East

-
I was in the back garden with the dog and i saw a plane i'm not sure but i think it had a red tail and red engines if so what aircraft operator was it.
-
Possibly a Virgin Atlantic A340 or 747

Two from today An A340 and 767?

How many engine did it have? Porbably Virgin Atlantic as Casper pointed out.
Casper, first one is a Lufthansa A340-600 which evaded you yestersday.
The second one is a 777-200, as it has 3 flap fairings on the trailing edge of the wing, I believe the 767 has 4 flap fairings. That said I've no idea which airline ;D
-
I'm truely baffled as to what that 777 is casper. Got one contrail from today. A GSM 738, which got away from me a bit as a ran for the camara :P.
-
Was lot`s of good contrails yesterday-I got shots of the KLM MD11,the BA 747 and a few others. Can`t post them up yet-STILL NO INTERNET Grrrrr!!!!! >:( >:( :-X :-X
-
Just a few shots from today. Was very nice to see the TOM/FCA 757W heading to GLA from Las Palmas :). Second one is a UPS B763 and i think the third is an AA 777, not sure though.
-
Can't help you there as I'm only beginning to tell the difference between a 747 and an A340 at altitude :)
-

Correct for all three (in my opinion) :)
-
It was very busy in the skies this morning. Captured these two (747 & 777?) around 8:50. At any one time I could see up to 4 in the sky at once.
-
Nice shot! Now that my exams are finished as of this morning, I've more time for some contrailing watching. I caught two United Airlines 777's yesterday evening about a mile apart, heading in the same direction.
-
Here is two from yesterday using camcorder.

These A340s are becoming as common as muck :LOL
[attachment deleted by admin]

and this is me spotting for contrails :LOL :LOL

Nice shot, just sit back and relax as the wife says :LOL :LOL :LOL :LOL
-
Haha very good Casper, surprised the wife didn't mind! My girlfriend's quite camera shy. What better way to enjoy a day in the sun ;D

here's one from yesterday, sorry about background noise the neighbor is building an extension

Thats a great thread, and the pics are great :)
-

I didn't hear any noise ;D Looks like an A340-300 or 747, more likely a 747.
Told Dave about this site and said id post a link here... hope you like ... ;D http://www.frequencydb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4605
Nice one Don, I'm surprised he managed to link up registrations with the aircraft themselves. The DC-9 was a good catch. And all those by hand holding a small compact camera up to a telescope! Impressive!
Now that I remember, I came across a photographer on jetphotos.net, S. Kustov, whom uses a telescope to photograph aircraft in detail at cruisning altitude. Have a peek at his shots... all very impressive!

My first real contrail pic

And they're looking good :)
-
Thanks, but i wasn't sure if i was going to get them the sky behind me is as black as coal and looks like we could get another THUNDER STORM.
-
Nice! Looks like you caught one of Delta's 767-400's!
-
Just caught this one and guess what the thunder has arrived again but it's behind me.
-
Got this when i was walking along the river bann.
-
Be careful when your out walking as you seem to have your eyes on the skys.... ;) :LOL nice pics.... the focus seem ok on them so you seem to have that sorted....keep up the good work..... ;D
-
I was watching the dog swimming when the wife told me it was above me.
-
First shot's great - Virgin A340 I think.

Hi there,
I just signed up to the forums here, lots of great pics, etc.
This is my first post, so I'd like to say a big Hello to everyone.
I think I'll start by posting some shots, to keep in the spirit of things.
All taken this morning over Dublin.
Cheers.
Squad.

Hi Squad and welcome to the forum :) Unfortunately I can't view Flickr hosted photos at work :( so I'll have to wait until I get home this evening, but I've no doubt they're fantastic :)
-
Super shots there Sqaud and welcome :).
-
Just as I thought, excellent photos - thanks for posting them.
-
Some nice shots squad and welcome to the forum. Did you take these shots with a small hand held camera held up to a telescope? I think I saw these on another forum :)

Thanks EGAA, Casper & Dave,
Yes Dave thats correct, it's a simple as that, with some provisions attached.
Obviously the spotting-scope/eyepiece has to be of good quality, prefrebly HD glass with larger (80mm) Objective lens.
The sun is the other big factor, how it reflects of the plane etc., your distance and position (sun behind you) from the plane and of course camera shake,
usually caused by a low shutter speed or maybe cheap tripod thats motion would not be very fluid.
The beauty of all this is being a Birder I had all the equipment already, but having a good spotting scope alone is worth the money with overhead flights, without even taking a picture.
Taking pictures alone is time consuming, and takes away a lot of the enjoyment from just watching the plane.
A lot of the shots usually turn out rubbish, but sometimes pays off for the few good results.
The results will also look very amateurish compared to one's taken through a proper (usually expensive) Astronomy scope,
in combination with a digital SLR camera (not cheap) with various adapters.
I would like to go down that road, but due to funding it will have to wait.
Have a look a SkyStefs site to see how its done at the highest level :

Purely genius! Are the shots taken from your back garden. Seeing the reults make the time and effort all worth while!
Got these a few moments ago.
Nice one, you're catching all the rare aircraft... Monarch A300, Delta 767-400ER and a First Choice 767. Even a noisey Air France 777-300ER! How's the camera coming along?
-
It's excellent just getting used to all the settings for various photo types.
other than that it is very easy to use just like a piont and shoot camera.
Most of the contrail pic's are at a shutter speed of 4000 as the clouds have been moving very fast with the wind so i have to get them quickly before a cloud covers them.
-
1 pic from today too many clouds.
-
some from today
-
Nice ones. Definitely getting better at this photography lark :) Although I wouldn't crop as tight.
-
I only crop them to keep the file size small.
but the next one i get i will keep the original size.
-
No I don't mean resize them. When you get you're original don't crop in so tight as to get just the aircraft, crop it in so that you leave some of the contrail. Then resize that for uploading. Does this makes sense? If you take a look at some of the images Dave has posted you'll see that he hasn't zoomed in too much on the aircraft.
-
Some from today.
-
I thought i would put this one on i got it last night around 9:30pm or so.
-
Almost looks like a shooting star :) Haven't seen a contrail in days :(
-
I heard the plane but it was leaving no trail untill it was in the distance so i got it then.
As the sky clears today it may reveal more contrails.
-
Only good contrail from today so far.
-
Nice one. Looks like a 747
-
What a day for high altitude aircraft spotting ;D About 15 aircraft just past north of my house in a space of 15 minutes. Some didn't have contrails but I saw a good variety of aircraft.
US airways 767-200
Lufthansa A340-300 + A340-600
Air France A330-200 + 777-200 + 777-300ER
BA openskies 757-200 - a rare one! I got a pic of a lufty A346 passing right behind it.
Air Canada 767-300
Exciting stuff, all on the day I got a second class first in university for aerospace engineering ;D

all on the day I got a second class first in university for aerospace engineering
Congratulations. Some celebrating to be done this weekend then :)
-
well done great stuff. have a beer on me :LOL :LOL

Mucho Gracias guys ;D I just missed out on a first class by 0.6% but i'm not massively bothered :)

got this about 5mins ago.

Congrats Dave, very impressive, obviously you have your head screwed on your shoulders.
We'll be watching you carefully for future perks ;)
I haven't been taking many pics lately, as I'm in the middle of getting an attic conversion,
my new HQ :)
While in Dublin airport yesterday, I took a few shots of aircraft passing over Bagso heading west.
As there is a good distance involved I will post a few later as a quizz, no prices ;D
-
Have a go at guessing the Airlines :

PS - just had a look at the preview, I didn't realise I cropped them so tight,
so they might be easy to some ;)
-
First one is Olympic Airlines
-
Thanks Squad :D How's the attic conversion going? Are you doing it yourself or have you got contractors in building it?
As for the photos;
1) Olypmic A340-300
2) Looks like an A330-300 meaning it would be Air Berlin (LTU) ;D
3) Mexicana 767 and a good catch too!
-
Well done Dave, go straight to the top of the class :)
But sorry I have to give you 99.4% as you didn't give anyone else a chance ;)
I will make them harder next time, maybe just the contrail :D
The attic is taking shape with a lovely Velux 3 in one window, to give panoramic views,
so I won't be caught out by USAF ;)
It is of course being done by professionals, as I'm scared to get on the roof ::)
-
Too easy squad ;D
I ask about the attic conversion because I myself completed one. We had professionals install the Velux window and attic stairs/ladder, however I did the rest of the work. I added a nice wooden tongue and groove ceiling and plasterboard walls. I had great fun building it but theres still one or two things that need fixing such as the addition of a window sill and proper doors added to get to the small storage areas :D
-
Got this it was making a fantastic sound.
-
Rubbish, I was gonig to see wo could identify these aircraft but I forgot about the file names which give the answers away ;D
Very surprising to see an Etihad 777-300ER flying overhead!
-
In between landings at MAN on the second day, there were shed loads of contrails with a tonne of interesting aircraft. Also saw this interesting bird not quite at high altitude 8)
-
Contrails are good fun to shoot and sometimes you get unexpected results-took this late May as the Sun went down-I rather like the result. 8)
-
Love the beluga plane well spotted.
-
got these this afternoon before the clouds gathered.

A few more I took during May/June near BFS

-
Wait-there`s more
-
Nice shots guys, I could never get bored of contrail shots as they never cease to amaze me :D
-
Another one taken early May this year.
-
An unusual contrail.
and a close up picture.
-
Very unusual indeed. Don't think I've ever seen one like that.
-
I think it maybe water vapour from the clouds that were building up then causing the extra contrails.
-
Caught this 747 yesterday - any ideas of the operator?

UPS MD-11 recently
-
managed to get this yesterday but no contrail as i think it was climbing.
i think it is a BA aircraft.
The pic's are heavily cropped as it was miles away if the sun wasn't out i wouldn't have seen it.
-
Looks like a BA B767 to me
-
UPS MD-11 recently
Gorgeous shot!
i think it is a BA aircraft.
As suggested above, either a 767, or more likely to be a 777.
-
First time shooting these today (really should have set up the tripod etc, but was busy doing other stuff & just grabbed them when opportunity arose :-[ )
Any C&C welcome!
Cropped about half the original frame size (ish)

See nothing wrong with those - love the last one in particular.

Caught these at the Zoo today.

Day off today -caught these-have done my best to ID them but not always easy.
Any suggestions welcome. My attempt is in the file name.

Great shots Angry Turnip, you were a busy-boy today ;)
I got up with the intentions of taking some shots,
but when I saw they were not trailing, and the first five aircraft
were the same aircraft as the last 3 times I took flyovers,
I decided maybe tomorrow instead :)
-
Loads more sorry!
I think your 330mys might be an Air France.
-
Great shots Angry, some nice close ups there. Just one or two corrections ;) Nice catch of the Egypt Air 777.

Still at the top of the classroom Dave ;) :D
-
Impressive stuff Dave-Thank you-neck was getting sore looking up at all those contrails!
Must remember to stop down a bit more and might get more detail.
Wasn`t sure if T.Cook A321 go across the pond either so B757 is probably more likely.
Most taken between 1230 and 1400 for future reference.
Police Islander G-BSWR was also at high level and got a shot of him at 8,000ft approx
-
Caught these three this morning - a 747, C-17 and what appears to be a balloon (weather?) of some description - it has a cord connected to something below it.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
That last one is a UFO mothership and Shuttle with Elvis Presley on board (Ah Huh Huh) ;D
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
Nice catch with the weather balloon there - they release those not too far from your location!
I used to track them with my scanner and some sonde software :)
-
Thanks Mark. That's the second time I've caught one on camera. The first time I wasn't able to see the attached load.
-
The weather Balloon was an interesting catch, I didn't realise it's 'load' was carried so far under it.
Here's the C17 I caught in Dublin around the same time you caught it up North.

OK this is my first photo post from new camera. I cropped it to 800x536, hope this is the right thing to do. ???
I'm quite pleased with this as a first attempt. Probably could have been slightly better if I'd been on manual focus but I'm staying on auto untill i get the hang of the Camera.
I think it is an Emirates flight, hopefully someone can recognise what make it is.

Certainly nothing wrong with that. Well captured.

Great catch, and an unusual one too, and Emirates 777-300.
Does anyone use manual focusing for contrail shooting? I've never actually tried manual, maybe worth a go?
-
Thanks Dave,
Probably beginners luck but I will try manual focus as I think I could hopefully squeeze a bit more out of my lens

Got this shot of an Air France A330-200 Sunday 20th Sept whilst waiting for the Harriers.
[old post - attachment deleted by admin]
-
Got the same shot at the same time :) But mines a wee bit further away.
-
Nice shot Angry. Is there a live radar site anywhere on the web that you can see what is comming your way. I've tried ACARSD but i don't seem to get many planes that send their co-ordinates?
Xair
-
Not sure about a live radar site-might have to get an SBS or Airnav system for that.
Personally I just stand about and see what appears :)

Nice shot Angry. Is there a live radar site anywhere on the web that you can see what is comming your way. I've tried ACARSD but i don't seem to get many planes that send their co-ordinates?

There is some private sharing of data between SBS box owners but nothing live on the 'net.Your best bet would be OpenATC (assuming someone near here uploads data to them). The data is five minutes delayed but if you keep that in mind you would be able to predict when an aircraft will be passing overhead.

Thanks Angry and Blackbird, I've tried the Open ATC tonight but either no one is tracking over NI or all the planes are crashing into the Isle Of Man :o as they stop dead, over the island. I'll have to look into one of these Airnav Boxes.

Caught this today. Triple 7? Also missed a (relatively) low flying 747.

Google 'Planeplotter' as well - it uses data from SBS and Airnav boxes too.I think there is a free trial version, and then a one off fee around £20 for the full version.Don't know if anyone here uploads data to it though.
Edited to add
It's hard to beat having your own box (which can be taken to any location, provided you have a laptop),and knowing exactly what is passing overhead.I've seen them on ebay for between £250 and £300.

Yup, but where on earth is it flying too? Was it flying over Antrim/Down?
When at Belfast International on Sunday evening, during my time there, 4 747's flew directly overhead, none of which had contails, and at least 2 of which were BA 747's.
One of them however was an older model of the 747, likely to be a 747-200. I've no idea of the airline, anyone with an RBS box know? It was Sunday evening, maybe just after 4pm.

Would that possibly be air malta flying out of glasgow?

The Air Malta pic was taken a few weeks ago when I was on holiday near Rome-just thought I would pitch it in to confuse people-a bit naughty I know ;)
I didin`t say it was taken here so I get off on a technicality ;D

Using that radar web site i managed to get this pic of an A340 shown over my house.
Plus a lucky pic of an aer arran with a contrail in the foreground.
you have to enhance the pic slightly to see the other aircraft.
