USS Mason will be calling into Belfast this morning, an Arleigh Burke DDG. They normally tote a pair of SH-60s.
-
Just called port control as "Warship 87".

Nice one.
She's had an "interesting" cruise!
-
Docked north on Clarendon, decent view from Odyssey.
Just south of an Arklow shipping coaster which should show on AIS sites.
Hangar appears closed as of 13:30.

That's one way of putting it ;D
What better way to unwind than a port visit to Belfast.

Odd that she's moored there. Most warships usually tie-up in Pollock dock.
Any info on how long she's here for?
-
Would make a cracking night photo from Titanic Experience car park.
Approximate location ( errors possible due to parallax ).

"for the weekend"
-
My man on the ground says that USS Mason has been moved, no longer on Clarendon dock. May have moved around to Pollock area.
Disregard previous, he didn't bother going far enough to see properly. Sacked. There is a now a vacancy for the Ards Attaché to Belfast should anyone be interested.
-
Ha! I had exactly the same thing yesterday afternoon from a somewhat moody chum who texted me to say "It's NOT on Clarendon!" then somewhat meekly recanted as he spied it while driving home.
-
It's an excellent example of hiding in plain sight. If I hadn't know that the ship was definitely there my eye would have skipped it as a 'gap' along the dock. It's actually the big white-ish phased-array panels that betrayed it.
-
It has not moved far. It is directly opposite the HMS Caroline dock. Even easier to see.

Lovely shots.

Very nice indeed and thanks for the location update, I shall try to take a run over on Sunday.
The Burkes seem to have more appendages all over them than I recall from my days of Recognition Journal. Would seem to rather spoil the stealthiness.

Finally got a run down today before she leaves tomorrow.
Had tried on Friday night for some night shots but she had a tanker parked alongside, obscuring her :(
Couldn't help but notice that her hull number (87) is faded both on the bow and stern. I wonder is that a security measure?

USS Mason passed Holywood (outbound) at 1620 this afternoon. Actually not the only USN visitor we have had this summer. This is USN Bruce C Heezen, a USN Pathfinder class Oceanographic Survey Ship. It has been in twice to my knowledge. (July and September)

Given the interest in the warship movements in Belfast Lough last year. I thought this might be of interest to some. This photo of 19 warships moored in Bangor Bay during WW2 was in a book on the Belfast Blitz and is credited to PRONI

I was recently chatting to a chap* whose friend's father was postmaster in Bangor at the time of D-Day, and who did the rounds of the moored ships each day with sacks of mail on a small boat.
One day the young lad accompanied his father on the boat, and the crew of a US warship hauled the lad up to their ship along with the mail. He was shown around and grandly entertained and filled with all sorts of 'luxurious' foods before being winched back down at the end of his father's round, somewhat heavier.
* My brain is a sieve so I can't remember who. Was it you, Mr Smyth?

The Dutch frigate HNLMS Tromp looks to be turning up the Lough, currently sitting just off Groomsport.
Has been known to carry an NH90.
-
She circled in Bangor Bay for an hour or so and now looks to be headed back out to sea, not sure what that was about!
-
Any of these ships likely to have helos on their decks? ???

Probably not, of those docked only BNS Louise-Marie has a helideck.

HMNLS De Ruyter F804 on her way up the Lough.

It appears that HNLMS Tromp was surveying the anchorage for HNLMS De Ruyter. The two ships passed in opposite directions west of IOM and De Ruyter is now moored in the same location that Tromp was at earlier this afternoon.

We were at the Belfast Maritime Festival today but they did a really poor job of advertising which ships were in, and where. The maps being issued don't have any information on where ships might be moored. I had no idea that HMS Monmouth was in, for example.
ILV Granuaile is moored and open for public visits at Donegall Quay, along with four sailing ships. There may be others but we didn't find them!

Managed to get chatting to some of the crew on Monmouth. Beauty of a ship!
Same here. Was surprised to get access to the bridge, they haven't allowed that on earlier visits.
Most surprising thing to learn from speaking to the crew was that the ships are not automatically assigned a helicopter. They only get one, inc. support personnel and parts, when the ship is deploying overseas, i.e. the Gulf or South Atlantic, etc. While in home waters the helicopters are based ashore, Culdrose probably, and sortie out when needed.
-
In a similar manner, I was listening to a podcast lately and they were explaining that when a US carrier returns home, the entire CVW leaves the ship and heads to an NAS and returns when the carrier deploys.
The guys I was chatting to were sating the Type 45's are ina bad way and the Frigates are currently the workhorse of the RN.

That's unusual as RN visits in the past were always minus the helo. Instead the helis operate from shore bases, Yeovilton or Culdrose presumably when needed.

HMS Westminster departed at 1500 today (Sun)

Have reason to believe HMS Lancaster will be visiting before the weekend.
-
Very good.
It's a pity the docks aren't as accessible as they used to be. I recall rolling up beside some visiting warships and getting some nice pictures. The bit of waste ground near Sainsbury's Holywood Exchange will probably be the best spot to view arrival/setting off.

Any further ETA information for the boat?
-
Nope, but if it's not here by early tomorrow my source is wrong!
-
Last known position of Lancaster was Lerwick in the Shetlands about 12 days ago.
Nothing on AIS since that, although it could be running quiet.

-
On royal navy Web page it says she's out on sea trials and last known position was alongside in Portsmouth
-
Hmm, frankly it could be anywhere. But Malone RFC Thirds are playing an HMS Lancaster XV tomorrow afternoon at Gibson Park!
-
She's reported to have left Lerwick at 0251 this morning encounter to Plymouth
-
Currently off the coast of Islandmagee - and one of her Wildcats is running down the Strangford coast? Maybe he's going to land on her as she sails up Belfast Lough.... ;D
-
It's still out there worrying the ferries to Scotland :)
And the wildcat is Lynx ZZ396 HARP24 , although I can't get an exact position on it looks like it's landed on the back of Lancaster .
-
Think she's waiting on that BFO liner getting berthed.
-
Heading up the lough now ....
-
Looks like it's berthing on the Herdman Channel just next to the roundabout at the entrance to Gotto Wharf (Northern Road) in case anyone wants a looksee :)
-
From rookie
Anyways was anyone able to get a glimpse of HMS Lancaster today ? I forgot to take a spin round to see if I could on my way home from work. I'm assuming her wildcat will be tucked up in her hanger at present.
-
From Sneaky_Nikon
No but she looks to be tied up a bit on the seaward side of Pollock, which means as long as there's nothing else berthed in the way, good pics can be had from the opposite side of the channel.
-
From Jimi182
That's if you can access the Docks - they are all secure now with end of Transition period and heightened imports checks etc.
-
From rookie
I know it's pain in the rear end now especially at night when the stena docks I used to be able to nip round that way to avoid the back log at fortwilliam. But don't even try to venture in there either 2 boys in our warehouse decided to cut through by going under the barrier and we where all wondering why the harbour police where on site one morning . They seem to clamp down on anyone who shouldn't be down there.
Note from AT-I had to move a few posts from another thread, to this thread and some detail was lost. Sorry.

I believe this is the first Navy visit since Covid hit in 2019

Been a few MCMVs and Archer Class in over the plague years!
-
And speaking of Archers, looks like HMS Tracker is inbound the Lough.
-
Elbe class fleet tender, A-511 FGS Elbe, currently at anchor off Bangor. She had come down from the ex area with the FS Cassiopée, but she's headed on south.
There's another 3 NATO vessels just approaching Islandmagee southbound, we'll see if they stop!
-
So, wee flotilla in the Lough. We should have the following all alongside shortly -
HMS Tracker - P274 - Archer Class Patrol Vessel - Royal Navy
LVNS Talivaldis - M-06 - Tripartite class MCMV - Latvian Navy
FGS Homburg - M-1069 - Frankenthal Class MCMV - German Navy
KNM Olav Tryggvason - A536 - Reine Class Patrol Vessel - Norwegian Coast Guard
FGS Elbe - A511 - Elbe Class Fleet Tender - German Navy
BNS Primula - M924 - Tripartite Class MCMV - Belgian Navy
-
There's a P2000 tied up beside the Odyssey.
-
LÉ Róisín - P51 - Róisín Class OPV - Irish Naval Service is alongside at the Odyssey.
-
HMS Brocklesby - M33 - Hunt Class MCMV is alongside at the Odyssey, her decommissioning tour, I believe.

Is it not HMS Shoreham that's had the chop recently? I think they were to transfer a couple of them to Ukraine? I know HMS Brocklesby was on a 3 year deployment to the middle east and had returned to the UK around November.
-
I think you're right actually.
-
HMS Pembroke - M107 - Sandown Class MCMV - RN Will be alongside in Belfast for jubilee weekend and open for public visits.
If you're interested in getting aboard, you'll need to book www.eventbrite.com/e/visit-hms-pembroke-in-belfast-tickets-353825560777 but there's no charge.
-
I see HMS Pembroke left today. She was heading up the lough the lough about 1515. I did get a chance to get on board yesterday with my daughter. It was interesting. Thanks for the heads up on it sneaky if I hadn't off known I would have missed out . It gives me my taste of militaria as I'm now missing the armed forces day next weekend as I'll be at the Ballymema show now. I wonder if we can get the reds to transit via Ballymena ;)
-
Managed to see her on Saturday.

I think somebody has been playing with a photoshop tool, that pic does not look remotely convincing IMHO.

My thinking too.any has anyone saw or heard more on HMS Westminster?? I'm assuming she's going to Dock in Pollock Dock? Last ping was just isle of Wight 3 days ago. For I wonder if she will have a helo on board?
-
Not exactly a warship but RFA Tidesurge (a138) is along side at the cruise terminal at present. I'm assuming it's possibly for H&W get a look around for the new ships to be built
-
French frigate Bretagne D665, is currently in Polllock Dock Arrived 2nd May.
Commissioned in 2019 it's a very modern vessel.

Noticed her this morning when passing. Her hanger was open but my glimpse was that quick I didn't a good look to see if the helo was aboard. If you Stand at the fence faceing Whitla fire station you can see her hanger clearly.
-
Any idea how long it's staying?
-
Last time I saw her she was alongside the yard in Lorient getting final fitting.
-
Nato warship F363 Niels Juel is currently along side in pollock dock
-
On the move at the minute 19.45

H&W posted about this. In for some repair work. And it was used in the World War Z movie.
