Red Arrows in Belfast?
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:25:09 AM »
Saw on another forum that the Red Arrows are suppose to be appearing at the Shorts Family Day on Saturday 4th October '08, at the Shorts Queens Island Facility in Belfast. ANyone know if this is true, and at what time?

I have confirmation from a friend who works at Shorts that the Red Arrows are indeed coming. I will try to get some times.

I'm not sure if it's a full display, perhaps a few flypasts. My Bombardier friend has managed to get me and my girlfriend 2 tickets for the family day so I'll be in the bombardier facilities when the Reds come. I'm not sure if I'll get any good photograph opportunities of them, but I guess I'll see the CRJ fuselage sections and Lear jet fuselages.

This is what I love about this site! Since it's a local website, it helps pick up on aviation events that would otherwise pass without being noticed. Thanks for picking up on this Casper.

Ok guys, apparently the Reds due into the City 9.00 and the display is at 11.00 and there should be lots of aircraft movement in the morning. Queen Mary 2 is also due into the docks at 11.00am. Nice!

Hi! Where did you get that Queen Mary 2 info from? According to Cunard's website the QM2 will be in New York on 4th October?

http://www.cunard.co.uk/CruiseCalendar.asp?main=voy&Region=7&sub=&LeftNav=ourShips&shipid=QM2&Ship=QM2

Looking forward to seeing the Reds though! Let's hope the weather is decent!

Hi there, thanks for pointing that out. I was ment to say Queen Elizabeth 2 will be coming, and *not* the Queen Mary. Apologies for that mistake. In my opinion the QE2 is just as special as the QM2 :)

I believe the QE2 is off to Dubai soon where she will become a floating hotel. Sorry if I raised your hopes, but welcome to the forum greg.

thanks for the welcome!

Planes are my thing  ;)

Still like to see a good boat though  :)

The Crown Princess was in the other day - it was huge!

Hope the weather is good for the Reds!

Yea, and thats what the IKEA's carparks good at... boats and planes  ;D

I was in Finland a month ago, and whilst there, we took a cruise over to Sweden, and on the way into port, we trailed 3 cruise ships, one of them being a Celebrity X cruise ship. Upon leaving the port later that day, we trailed the same cruise ships, weaving in and out of the Swedish Islands that border the coast.

Upon returning from Finland, I went down to BHD to do some plane spotting a week later, and the same cruiseship belonging to Celebrity X was in dock opposite us. Nice little coincidence which had me smiling. The moral of this story is... well actually there is no moral  :-\

IKEA's carpark is class for EGAC plane spotting  :)

Another good location is if you drive down to the right past B&Q and park at the end of the runway when the aircraft are doing their approach from the Belfast Lough direction  ;D

I also heard that the bridge at the railway station isn't bad either.

My brother in law who is a police sarge tells me the area around Belfast City will be very heavily policed on Saturday.
The access road to the railway bridge and possibly the bridge it`s self will be closed.
That bridge couldn`t handle the weight of a large crowd.
Also strong police presence at Ikea,B+Q site etc so I don`t think it will possible to see much without being moved on.

I wonder will the local natives object to the Red Arrows being at the airport?

If you don`t like aircraft noise-don`t live near an airport!!!

You couldn't pull a few strings :) Only joking. I might venture though and just drive past to see how crowded it is.

So the Ikea Carpark and the railway bridge are effective out of bounds  :-[ Will there be any dedicated areas for members of the public to view the display?

Crikey, that leaves only victoria Park for photographing. I'll have to get there early at around 8am. I can't believe the Reds will actually be landing at City Airport. Wonder if they'll land in any kind of formation, or will it be single file.

They usually land in groups of 3-runway at BHD is very wide so should not be a problem.

I suspect any display they do will be short and just some formations-
I think if they did a full display over the city it would cause chaos on the roads with people wanting to stop and watch.

At Moria this year people were stopping on the motorway way to watch the Yakolevs!!! :o

East Belfast is NOT the place to be seen on your own with an expensive DSLR--- so be very careful!!

I have been hassled a few times in the past by youths in Victoria Park and on the bridge..seriously keep your wits about you if you go down there.

Many thanks for the advice. Looking like I might not be able to make it anyway, my car is of the road and the mechanic can't look at it until next week. Suppose I could always get the train to Sydenham though.

Yea, I went to Victoria Park once in a summers evening and there were too many 'local kids' there so it wasn't exactly a pleasent experience. Although if the airshow is pretty early on (at 11am) then they may stilll be in bed at that time :)

It's a shame the IKEA carpark will be closed off, it's an ideal place to capture the Red's landing. I wonder if the road at the end of runway 22 will be closed off as well. I'm definately going to try getting tickets into Shorts Bombardier now!

I very much doubt they will do much more than a few passes and if the weather is bad they may will just land and leave it at that-still it would be nice to see them against the backdrop of the H+W cranes!

Well the unmistakable noise of the Reds just passed over Queens University.I didn't see them but knew instantly it was them. I have yet to hear them again so I'm eager to know what they were doing. Weather tomorrow looks to be bad, but fingers crossed the bad weather doesn't hit us until after midday. QE2 now due in at 2.30.
