Newcastle Festival of Flight 2014
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:12:45 PM »
I know we havnt even passed Christmas yet  :chris5:  but according to my son JasT, one of the airshow calender sites briefly ! listed August 9th as the 2014 date.I didnt see it myself and he said it came off the site again after a refresh  ???
However that started me on my now yearly "annoying" of the Down Council festival office and have been in touch with them already to try and get them to secure the new Midair Squadron  :)  [2 Hunters and the Shorts built Canberra PR9 all in silver livery now] .... well , no harm in getting a shout in early  lol

Yea, there was a listing for the 9th but it again disappeared. This was similar to last year around this time when they had the 10th August listed very briefly for a day or so. The 9th does seem the most likely given the past dates too.

would prefer them in their "natural" RAF colours but silver will do aswell if the 3 fly together ..the second Hunter is still in the paint shop.

Down Council have got back to me but didnt confirm OR deny the 9th :) and have promised to pass on the request for the Midair Squadron to whoever is in charge for 2014.

Yeah agreed the silver is a bit boring,RAF Camo on the Hunters would be much better.

Suspect that it may be a case of a (potential) sponsors logo looking better on silver than it would over cammo.

Good point, just silver will make them hard to see against our usual grey sky-a bit of colour would be nice-should be a good combination of aircraft anyhow and I would love to see them display over here.

Well spotted!

This year I think I'll take position up in the old quarry on the hill; down on the promenade was bedlum in 2013 and I ended-up sitting on a 6 ft wall to try to see the action.

We had a fantastic spot last year, so we will probably head back up there away from the mass crowds. I would love to see the T6 Texan again but only if it does the same entrance as last year. It was spectacular which sadly was missed by the larger crowds.

We were watching Red 10 get out of the helicopter when it came in VERY low right round the side of the Slieve Donard hotel into a turn right over us. Was simply amazing to see.

I was at the "silver ball" last year and I was lucky enough to get some space at the barrier across from it to see the display but I think next time I will head to the quarry.

Just out of curiosity, is the best and quickest way to it through the Donard Car Park?  Its been a few years since I was up there on the Mourne ramble and for the life of me I can't remember!

Also lens wise, I have a 300mm lens and I'm thinking of getting something bigger.  Is there anywhere where I can even rent or borrow a bigger lens over here?

I used this company on occasion last year and they were top-class.  The only sting is the cost of posting the lens back ( needs to be an insured carrier or Special Delivery ).

http://lensesforhire.co.uk/

I did try hiring from Calumet on Boucher Road but they have so few lenses in-store for hire that they were going to have to ship from the mainland anyway.

the usual "sensible" requests were put to DDC to pass on to Jeff Salter before xmas although if he's in charge again then he probably had any requests sent out as soon as last years ended :) Being Farnborough year this year a few US machines might still be "knocking" around come August but I know any US requests must be in by November.Solo Turk is also a regular UK show visitor now over the summer so I asked them to look into that possibility rather than regurgitate the same acts which, although Joe Average and family love, we love to see something new without turning it into a us V the Port competition  lol

I wonder what other mainland UK shows are scheduled for the 9th,which may facilitate a few flypasts etc from participants if they were willing to nip across the water to Newcastle  ;)

These are so far the only other listings for 9th. Nothing we can get fly pasts from I don't think.

I've been looking around various schedules to see if any are out yet, the only one with one posted is Golden Apples F86 Sabre. It has nothing listed as of yet for the 9th Aug, but has for dates around that time.. I would really like to see it in Newcastle once again this year.

It is however listed for Bray on 20th July 2014

Most schedules don`t come out until around early March or even later,so I suppose we shall just have to be patient and see what the organiser's manage to come up with.
I expect the Reds will make a return, but you just never know.

Sent a few emails out this week and got a reply from Willie Felger who is the director of operations for Golden Apple Operations who run the F86 Sabre

Quote
Good evening Jason,

Apologies for the slow reply.  No I haven't heard anything from Newcastle, but we have been invited to Foyne in Eire on 13 July.  However as that conflicts with RIAT at Fairford I'm not sure we will make that.

We will keep our website updated - www.goldenappleoperations.org which might be of help.

Thanks for your interest - it is always good to know that our lovely aircraft is appreciated!

Best regards,

Willie Felger

Great to see them back. I love their new tail fin :)

I actually am watching the FoF 2013 on DVD at the minute (I ripped DDC webstream :D) noticed they said john beattie (T6 Texan Pilot) WILL be back for 2014. He also flew the Skyraider in 2012.

I believe the Seafire that has been booked a few times but didn't make it over last year is also flown by him.

Quite clever, I do like it.  Though I would have preferred Yellowjacks or Blue diamonds retro-schemes.

I had seen pics of the aircraft with blue tails, and wondered what they were going to do with it-looks pretty good, but I would like more nods back to the old teams, like maybe a half yellow, half black wing for the Yellowjacks and Black Arrows.

What do you think the next Red Arrows aircraft will be? Or, will they cease Ops when the Hawks are eventually retired? As good as the Red Arrows are, I'd rather see a Historical Military Flight display team keeping the great aircraft the RAF once operated for future enthusiasts.

If they shift to Hawk T2 they could outlive many of us on that type.

In terms of historic flights...  I doubt there'll be much above the BoBMF.  Part of the value of Red Arrows, the cynic in me says the major part, is the availability for sale of Hawk variants.
