Chopper just missed hitting an aircraft (Bell 407, Germany)
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:48:50 AM »
I think the chopper Pilot was chasing the aircraft and got too close to it!  :P
Bell 407 for refueling in Bonn-Hangelar EDKB, Germany. Although the tower told the pilot to watch out for an aircraft on the taxiway the situation became very dangerous.

What was he thinking? As he was coming to the junction did he not see the approaching aeroplane?

Manoeuvring a helicopter that slow whilst following a taxi way must take up alot of concentration. I could never understand why a helicopter is required to effectively land on a runway and taxi all the way to the parking space like an aircraft, although something obviously happened in the past that introduced this procedure.

I thought that too but looking at this footage I can see potential for damage from the helicopters down draught if it didn't follow the taxi way.

That is a crazy situation and the ATC procedures at that airport need serious attention!

The Heli is traveling much too quickly, and to follow the taxi way in the air like that is down right dangerous-concentration levels to manoeuvre a heli at such a low level are so high, that he didn`t see the taxiing Cessna.

The Cessna has right of way-it would have been more sensible for the heli to hover at a safe distance and then come in for fuel under the guidence of a marshall.

Also when the heli is starting up another Cessna beside it moves off!!! :o
Either the Cessna should have been told to wait, or the heli denied permission to start up until the Cessna had moved off.

Then to make things even worse two people just decide to walk across the ramp with the heli engines running!!! :o No high viz jackets and no marshall for the heli-ridiculous :o >:(

The BIG problem with many GA airfields is that many members are very slack about safety procedures.
I know the guys at Ards very well and they have problems frequently with people roaming around the ramp.
Anyone who is not a member of the flying club or an invited guest should NOT be on the ramp.
If a guest then, they should be escorted at all times by a club member in a high viz jacket-that is CAA law.
