So what hasn't visited Belfast?
« on: January 17, 2015, 07:12:03 AM »
Paul's oldies thread started me thinking: what postwar commercial aircraft have never visited Belfast airports?

It seems a remarkably short list, from my initial thoughts.

Contemporary, still a chance

Airbus A318
Airbus A350
Airbus Beluga  Jan 2003
Antonov An-140
Antonov An-225
Boeing 737-600 / -900
Boeing 787
CASA C212
CASA CN235  IAC, and Polish 295
DHC DHC-7 Brymon

Historic, no hope

Convair 340 series October 2004
Convair CV-880
Curtiss C-46
Dassault Mercure
DHC DHC-4 / 5
Ilyushin Il-86 and 96 May 1987 for 86, June 2013 for 96
Nord 262 possible Dublin diversion
Tupolev Tu-104 /124
Yakovlev Yak-40 and 42 42 in October 2002

And I'd expect the A350 and 787 to be knocked off that list within a few years.

Any other major ones I've missed?

Brymon operated DHC7s for a short time on the BFS/BHX route.  I flew on one to Brum.

Cool!  Another one off the list.

Was it quiet onboard?

Just realised that I omitted a bunch of the late-40s French oddities  ( Bretagne / Provence / Languedoc etc ) but I doubt they visited many places in the  UK anyway :)

Smudge are you talking about actually landing? It's just the A380 did a flypast at the City but didn't land so is this classed as a visit? Also has the Airbus A300-600ST Beluga ever visited?

Interesting topic so I've made it 'sticky' :)

Did we deffo never take an IL-86?

There was a point, '84/5ish(?) when Aldergrove seemed to accept a spate of Aeroflot diversions from Shannon.  I caught a '62 one Sunday morning, which was a pleasant surprise.

Edit:- Also think there's been at least on N.262 diversion from Dub. Possibly into City.

Aeroflot at Aldergrove - what I would have given as a wee nipper to have seen those  *sigh*

I was fascinated at the time by the fact that they called through Shannon, seemed like two different Worlds meeting.

I`m pretty sure an Airbus A300 Beluga came into BFS Jan 2003 with a horizontal stabilizer for a BMI A321 G-MIDF ?.

It had been sliced by de-icing gear at BHD.

Nice one!  10th January 2003.    I didn't even realise... what was I doing that day?

F-GSTB                   Airbus A300-600ST

* smudge ticks that off the list

And the A380 is half-and-half... it did come here deliberately but as Casper says it didn't touch its wheels.  Hmmm.

And when I was following-up on the Beluga I came across a reference to Convair 580 C-FKFA passing-through Aldergrove in October 2004.  That should take care of the Convairliner entry: it was built as a 340 in 1953!

It was , Smudge, on both counts! Have a look at http://www.aeromedia.it/lb1711.html

I also remember a US-registered DC-3 (possibly ex-French Air Force) around the same time, with two dismantled ex-RAF Chipmunks on-board, being ferried to the USA....

Very nice!

I remember some trivia about the Israeli Noratlases ( Noratlii? ), they were part of a package along with the Ouragans or Mystères that the IDF was buying.  They didn't really want the transports but had to buy them nonetheless.

There was one airworthy in France a few years ago, that'd be a real airshow gem.  Like two Sea Furys in close formation...

Only Noratlas I ever saw was at Prestwick.

In for the airshow, which in its day was a brilliant show.

Hi guys,

Love this thread 8)

Mention of the Beluga and Yak-42 took me back! I've attached mp3 recordings of the Beluga heading home and the Yak arriving. The Yak file also has a few other callsigns people might find interesting including an Easy 737-300 and a British Midland Fokker 100 8)

The Luftwaffe sent a Nord Noratlas over to collect Seacat Missiles. I've seen photos of the loading at Nutts Corner
