Hi Squad and welcome to the forum :) Unfortunately I can't view Flickr hosted photos at work :( so I'll have to wait until I get home this evening, but I've no doubt they're fantastic :)

Some nice shots squad and welcome to the forum. Did you take these shots with a small hand held camera held up to a telescope? I think I saw these on another forum :)

Thanks EGAA, Casper & Dave,

Yes Dave thats correct, it's a simple as that, with some provisions attached.
Obviously the spotting-scope/eyepiece has to be of good quality, prefrebly HD glass with larger (80mm) Objective lens.
The sun is the other big factor, how it reflects of the plane etc., your distance and position (sun behind you) from the plane and of course camera shake,
usually caused by a low shutter speed or maybe cheap tripod thats motion would not be very fluid.
The beauty of all this is being a Birder I had all the equipment already, but having a good spotting scope alone is worth the money with overhead flights, without even taking a picture.
Taking pictures alone is time consuming, and takes away a lot of the enjoyment from just watching the plane.
A lot of the shots usually turn out rubbish, but sometimes pays off for the few good results.
The results will also look very amateurish compared to one's taken through a proper (usually expensive) Astronomy scope,
in combination with a digital SLR camera (not cheap) with various adapters.
I would like to go down that road, but due to funding it will have to wait.
Have a look a SkyStefs site to see how its done at the highest level :

Purely genius! Are the shots taken from your back garden. Seeing the reults make the time and effort all worth while!

Got these a few moments ago.

Nice one, you're catching all the rare aircraft... Monarch A300, Delta 767-400ER and a First Choice 767. Even a noisey Air France 777-300ER! How's the camera coming along?

It's excellent just getting used to all the settings for various photo types.
other than that it is very easy to use just like a piont and shoot camera.
Most of the contrail pic's are at a shutter speed of 4000 as the clouds have been moving very fast with the wind so i have to get them quickly before a cloud covers them.

No I don't mean resize them. When you get you're original don't crop in so tight as to get just the aircraft, crop it in so that you leave some of the contrail. Then resize that for uploading. Does this makes sense? If you take a look at some of the images Dave has posted you'll see that he hasn't zoomed in too much on the aircraft.

I heard the plane but it was leaving no trail untill it was in the distance so i got it then.
As the sky clears today it may reveal more contrails.

What a day for high altitude aircraft spotting  ;D About 15 aircraft just past north of my house in a space of 15 minutes. Some didn't have contrails but I saw a good variety of aircraft.

US airways 767-200
Lufthansa A340-300 + A340-600
Air France A330-200 + 777-200 + 777-300ER
BA openskies 757-200 - a rare one! I got a pic of a lufty A346 passing right behind it.
Air Canada 767-300

Exciting stuff, all on the day I got a second class first in university for aerospace engineering ;D
