Amsterdam Schipol Airport Day trip
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:17:20 AM »
Last Wednesday I flew to Amsterdam Schipol Airport for a day trip of spotting. Truely amazing airport with heavy after heavy after heavy of arrivals. So many 747's that your head would explode! We hired a car to get out to the main runways where we had foggy but sunny weather for the morning which then turned to heavy snow in the afternoon, thus closing the airport. Any how, I could bore you with lots of arrival photos however there is one photo which just made my trip worth while...

Firstly we spent half an hour at the spotting terrace which is huge.... covers most of the airport roof. The sun only rose in our last 5 minutes there unfortuantely.

We then opted to rent a car to head out to the runways to catch some action shots. The famous Polderbaan runway was the place of choice for arrivals. On our way there, we stopped off at an emergency gate to catch some aircraft taxing past after arriving on the Polderbaan.

Then off to the Polderbaan where our view of the runway was unpeded! We only remained there for an hour which was during the quite time if the day yet still saw a larger number of heavies.

The visibility was quite poor and the fog led to most of the photographs being abit soft. Editing was hard as the hedge in the foreground offset the contrast for the aircraft in the fog, which took a good bit of editing to get around. The fog also gave a nice yellow glow.

Also a large number of Cargo 747F daily at AMS

Unfortunately my company wanted to go to McDonalds as well as visit the local aviation shop, thus we had to leave for 2 hours. When we got back, it was cloudy and started to snow heavily.

The airport then closed in the evening leaving a large amount of cancelled flights... except for mine. My first flight with Easyjet and it was the only flight to depart on time... very impressed!

Despite the weather it seems to have been a worthwhile trip - one to be recommended?

Definately recommend visiting Amsterdam Schipol. It's such a huge airport with contast movement of large aircraft.

The only thing is getting about the airport. If visitng, you'd either need to hire a car, or meet up with a local so they could take you to some of the local spots. The Polderbaan runway is a mile or two away from the airport itself, and takes an aircraft 25 minutes to taxi to.

I'm heading back in March for a few days incase anyone is interested  ;)

Somehow the KLM tail shot was awarded a screener's choice  :) It only took 1600 photos to get one  ;D
