Big Sigmas

Thinking I might invest in one of the "long" Sigma zooms (along with a D500), it'll be used for rugby, aeroplanes, maybe motorbikes occasionally.

Anyone care to weigh in on which I should be looking at?

I wouldn't be influenced by the big long ones, if you're going to be rugby and motorbikes, you need to be looking at the speed of the lens. No lower than 2.8 imo. You'd get away with 200 2.8, or 300 2.8, and fit a 1.4 or 2.0 TC when you need more range for planes. Best of both worlds. Anything less than 2.8 will cripple you for sports.

The Sigma 150-500 or 150-600mm are excellent for aircraft,I haven`t used them for footie or rugby.A big lens takes some getting used to,as they are heavy,and don`t suit everyone.
The Sigma produces great results and is very versatile,price is reasonable as well with good backup service from Sigma.

Have the 70-200 EX-DG HSM f2.8
Nice lens, but bloody temperamental in my experience, been back a couple of times for AF problems.

Kinda committed to something long (ooh-err).

Just wondering which offers the best versatility & VFM in your humble opinions.

I can't speak of the sigma or nikon ranges, being a canon user. But shooting sport and aircraft, you'll find that the specification required for sport will dictate your lens - aircraft can be shot with a lower spec. Look for something with Optical stabilisation. Maybe a 400 2.8 if the budget goes that way?

So in the end I didn't get a big Sigma, I got a big Tamron, the 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2.
Focuses slower than the 'Sport' model Sigma, but quicker than the 'Contemporary' model Sigma and allegedly sharper than either at the bumpstop on the big end.

Got a decent deal for it on E-Infinity along with the D500 body and some odds and ends. Just waiting for the postie now!

I had looked at the Tamron myself,but thought the Sigma had better build quality, also you can tweak the focus performance with the Sigma lens dock,a very useful gadget.

Good luck with it, I am sure it`s a great purchase.

That brute is around 15,000 grand,and you really would have arms like Popeye using it-must be a hell of a strain on the mounting point.

I (semi) seriously considered buying that when it came out. I used to be a tad better off than wot i is now.
