BHD spotting location, the North side beside RWY 22
« on: March 06, 2010, 03:46:37 AM »
Hey guys, having spent several great mornings at Ikea for spotting, my attention now turns to spotting in the evening. Depending on how fussy you are, the light remains good at Ikea until 2 or 3pm, after which you will have to head to the opposite side of RWY 22, opposite Ikea, where the light will become good at around 4pm ish.

Sunday seems like a good opportunity to try out these areas as most business around there will be closed and less attention will be attracted to you.

Has anyone ever tried either of the two locations highlighted crudely in red?

For the place along the road, you could park your car in the nearest car park and just walk along the road.

For the more hardcore spotter, you could head towards the carpark nearest the turning circle at the end of RWY 22 although obviously a step ladder will be needed for photographing over the fence.

Giving the Harbour Police a courtesy call might be a good idea, just incase.

Does anyone have any experience or ideas?

Dave

Dave, I know that the security gates at the B&Q end of Airport Road West are closed on a Sunday but are the gates at the other end not closed as well, or at least restricted to pass holders only?

Thats a good point, I had assume they'd keep the gates open for the Bombardier workers but seemingly not. My investigation will have to until until a week day :)

That's inside the secure zone so you may not be able to get to it on a Sunday but any other day of the week should be okay.

You may be stopped by the Harbour Police as that's their patch but to the best of my knowledge (and the others can confirm or deny this) they haven't had any issues with people taking photos around there.

Is the old Moscow Camp site still fenced off or is it being redeveloped?

I tried the road just past it going towards the Bombardier site and could not get down due to building development.

It`s probably best to let the Harbour Police know your intentions before you head down there, rather than they turn up and stop you.

Should not be any problems as long as there is`nt loads of you and you take your litter home. :)

A friend of mine works in Ikea told me the reason they restricted the use of the top carpark, was due to litter/food being left, which was attracting gulls;therefore the airport gave off bucket loads, which is understandable.

Yup, thats what I'd recommend, just to be on the safe side. They don't mind you spotting there, just ring up before hand and state your intentions.

A little frustrating for the real plane spotters as I suspect they were not responsible for the littering. I often saw people coming out of Ikea with their children, going to the top of the carpark to watch the aircraft for a short while and then heading on, with the children dumping the litter on the ground. Then again, from what I remember, there only was one litterbin on the top deck of the car park.

They should turn the top deck of the car park into a beer garden :D

I know from previous experience that Ikea security had no problems about letting spotters go up on the top deck.

Has this changed?

No,you can still use it but I don`t think the let cars up top at weekends anymore.

That`s the situation I heard recently, but I can`t say for sure as I haven`t been down to Ikea this year.
