Invasion stripes used from D-Day onwards to help ID Allied aircraft when over Europe.

A couple of observations after reading this article:

1. If, as the article points out, the geography of Portrush is a major limiting factor in the displays then why not move the show to Portstewart beach?

It would provide a flat display line, allowing close up views for ALL the spectators, not just those on Ramore and Blackhill, just like an airfield.

2. Due to the fact that the display line keeps getting moved further and further off shore each year, those of us who go to Ramore and Blackhill are not as close as used to be the case, of course that's nothing compared to those on the promenade. This might be okay when a group of aircraft is performing, like the Red Arrows, but its intolerable when its a solo aircraft and all you can see is a blob in the sky.

3. The costs of positioning flights for aircraft is acknowldeged, due to the lack of a runway, as one of the primary factors hurting the airshows' chances of getting more varied types of aircraft to come over here.

Unless the show organisers are willing/able to make some major changes I don't see this situation getting any better.

Don't get me wrong, I still support the airshow and will continue to attend for as long as it runs but it still has its problems.

What does everyone else think?

I think that most of us here that are regular airshow attendees are aware of the limitations that the Portrush show has.
Yes;it does operate under ever more difficult conditions, but the message coming out from the organisers seems to be that this is going to be the way it is,and if you don`t like it tough.

That`s not a very positive way to respond-I have supported and attended every Portrush show, and want to see it continue, but the organisers need to take on board what people are telling them-not just reagrding the displays, but the traffic manangement and car parking etc.

An airshow is all about being able to see the aircraft-if they are specks in the distance, then people simply won`t bother.
It`s not worth the grief and considerable expense to travel to the airshow, see very little and then end up stuck in traffic for hours.
To me that simply isn`t acceptable and is unfair to the many enthusiasts that have supported the show through the years.
If need be it might be a good idea just to cut the show to one day,and even maybe just 2 or3 hrs for example.

I have to agree about the transport and parking but as i have found out the people involved are muppets translink will not put on extra trains and the people who think they can park anywhere they like even though the police try and resolve the situatuion nicely. as i found out last year when the police asked a db9 driver to move his car and the officer was told to F-OFF he was very calm and asked for a tow truck over the radio and then within 30secs of hearing the word TOW he moved the car quicker than going to the bar for a beer. I think that they should do what the same as they do for the NW200 open fields and other un-used areas for cars even if they charge about a £1 per car. As for campervans they should be stopped from parking on the major pavements as people in wheelchairs can't get passed and they won't even help getting that person get around their van. I had to get a policewoman to stop traffic so that they could get the lad back on to the path. I think if i had the money i would get rid of that old bar used to be called zio's and turn that whole area into a car park facility. charge a £1 and put that towards the rent.  I would also put on a park and ride service if you park in coleraine it would be free for the airshow only.  coleraine to the metropole direct. I know that certain people are against paying but what else do you do.

Excellent.

Nice to see they've responded to one of the major problems last year, no helicopters.

Here's hoping they can get the Merlin back too  ;D

Looking forward to seeing the Catalina, only saw one briefly at Farnborough last year. Hopefully he'll do a water landing/take off.

I don't think they would risk a landing on water as it's usually a bit rough that time of year....

I think it highly unlikely that there will be any Typhoon displays this year-the situation in Lybia hasn`t changed and it looks as if the Typhoons could be needed for sometime yet.
They might manage to find a spare aircraft/crew or two for some of the larger UK shows, what happens at RIAT would be a good indicator.
Some sort of flypast/restricted display might be possible, but a full blown display takes up too much time, with practise and display authorisation etc.
I suppose all we can do is wait and see,but I can`t help feeling that some of the big UK shows might get something, and the smaller shows are told-sorry not available.

According to the RAF Typhoon Display Team website, all that is going to be available is a PR team from the Typhoon Display team, with static examples at some shows.
There may well be a back up plan, but nothing as been released as yet,so we shall just have to wait and see how things pan out.
It does seem crazy that there would not be an aircraft and crew to display what is the RAF frontline fighter, but it shows just how deep the recent defense cuts have been.

Let's try and get a couple of GR4's back for a flypast or two (as per the recent Armed Forces Day celebrations).

Typhoon miles out to sea - no thanks.

I wasn`t sure if TTF meant the airshow had a backup plan,or the RAF Typhoon team.

I'm not sure if we'd even get the Typhoon PR team but there is another (more impressive) back-up.
