Kenya plane 'crashes in Cameroon'

A Kenya Airways plane with 114 people on board has reportedly crashed in southern Cameroon.

The flight, which originated in Ivory Coast, was reported missing on Saturday after it failed to arrive in Nairobi.

Cameroon state radio said the plane came down south of Douala, although Kenya Airways has only confirmed so far that it is missing.

People from at least 23 different nationalities were on board, including five Britons, the airline said.

Five Britons on board a plane thought to have crashed in southern Cameroon have been named by the Foreign Office.

Sarah Stewart, Adam Stewart, Anthony Mitchell, Stuart Claisse and Gordon Wright were on the Kenya Airways Boeing 737-800 when it came down.

Officials in Cameroon say search teams have now found wreckage from the plane, which had 114 people on board.

Rescue workers in Cameroon say there are no signs of any survivors from the Kenya Airways plane that crashed and was found in a mangrove swamp.

They say they could see many bodies partly buried in the mud of the swamp. The Boeing 737-800 was carrying 114 people from at least 23 countries.

Rescuers in Cameroon say they have retrieved the flight data recorder from the Kenya Airways plane that crashed in a mangrove swamp on Saturday.
Officials hope it may shed light on the cause of the crash of the Boeing 737-800 which killed all 114 people from at least 23 nations on board.

On Monday, rescuers began removing bodies from the crash site near Douala.

The plane came down shortly after taking off in heavy rain from Douala en route to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The pilot of the plane that crashed in Cameroon earlier this month was warned about the stormy weather, Cameroon's Civil Aviation Authority head has said.
"The control tower gave all the meteorological information to the commander of the flight... he decided to take off," Ignatius Sama Juma said.

Kenya Airways Boeing 737 crashed into swampland soon after take-off from Douala, killing all 114 passengers.

The official inquiry is yet to report on the cause of the disaster.
