Squadron Leader Mark Long, died after the Spitfire he was flying MK356,crashed during a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) near RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on 25 May 2024.

According to the report,decades-old debris in the engine`s carburettor was the most likely cause of the loss of power, which ultimately led to the fatal accident.

This report didn't go down well with the aviation community and the press sure made it worse.

These planes are stripped apart and rebuilt every winter season.

Yes, I don't understand it. As Jimi says they are well looked after. ARCO do a full maintenance every couple of years too which involves stripping them right down and replacing parts.

I find it hard to believe that both RAF engineers and ACRO engineers, who specialise in repair, maintenance and restoration of historic warbirds would constantly over look something like this.

This was a very complex investigation,it`s important to note the report isn`t the same as a CAA Air Accident investigation.
The DSA Defence Safety Authority carried out the investigation as a death of a person in an air accident, meaning it`s rather like an inquest. The report has 158 pages, You can find a link at the bottom of this article.

Most of us were of the belief that these aircraft are stripped down and carefully serviced every winter, but this report highlights differences in how the operators of warbirds service their aircraft.
I think it best for anyone who is interested to read the entire report, rather than just assume.
