I was flicking through the RIAT programme last night and it mentioned how Portrush was one of the RAF 100th Major events.
Other major public events throughout the centenary year include the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Cosford, Farnborough Scampton Swansea and Portrush Airshows. Overseas's air-forces are likely to participate in major events - A reflection of the RAFs enduring partnerships which the service has forged around the world.
-
Interesting from the RAF, though I assume Portrush date is wrong? https://www.raf.mod.uk/raf100/about/
NORTHERN IRELAND AIRSHOW
Portrush - 4/5 August
NATIONAL AIRCRAFT TOUR
Newcastle, N Ireland - 4/5 August
-
Interesting! I'm guessing this means flypast formations from the RAF at Newcastle and Portrush?
-
The 'National Tour' may actually be 4 aircraft from the RAF museums taking to the road and being on static for the various shows. According to a post on Fighter Control yesterday.

It's gonna be tricky getting them on static display at Newcastle & Portrush unless they are all helos! ;D
-
Tornado, typhoon, herc and hawk sounds like it to me?
-
Maybe a tanker :o
-
Plastic versions of the Chinook, F35, Typhoon and Red Arrows Hawk it is :D
-
:D :D
-
The Portrush dates are 1st/2nd September 2018 according to Flightline
https://www.air-shows.org.uk/2017/10/airshow-news-raf100-events-in-2018/
-
Yea saw that yesterday updated the first post with the dates. :)
-
Looking forward to it already :) the 100th Anniversary is a massive thing so it is great to see NI being represented.
-
Hoping for a special show this year with a bit more variation
-
Officially confirmed as of a few minutes ago on Portrush FB
-
Seems like there are more money issues for the Scottish International Airshow. It was reported a few weeks ago the council would not support the money needed. Today it has announced it will take a break after 2018 and return in 2020
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/future-ayrs-scottish-airshow-plunged-11719708
-
Wonder will this affect Portrush in what aircraft will come?
-
Swiss F18 confirmed for Scotland, I wonder if Portrush might get it too, or if the restrictions on the F16 from last year also apply on F18?
-
Catalina down for Portrush 2018. Also has a listing for a display at St Angelo, Enniskillen
http://catalina.cardinal-technologies.com/events.asp
-
Appears the BBMF (Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane) are confirmed for Portrush by this website:

Also it lists them for Newcastle Festival Of Flight 11th and 12th August.
So perhaps the show is two days after all? Info on the Newcastle show always seems to be rather tricky to find. :-\
-
They still want Newcastle to be two days. Discussions with flight director are on going to see what can be delivered within budget.
One council member in his infinite wisdom asked if the show even needs a flight director if its only a one day show.

RAF Tutor Display Team Dates 2018 - http://www.air-shows.org.uk/2018/03/airshow-news-raf-tutor-display-team-dates-2018/ #airshows
-
RAF Typhoon self confirmed for both days as they release their display dates today
-
Red arrows just one day at Air Waves on Sunday 2nd September
-
Navy Wings has a listing (both days) for Air Waves Portrush with their Sea Fury T20.
-
RAF Falcons confirmed
-
RAF Falcons confirmed
According to their webpage (https://www.raf.mod.uk/display-teams/falcons/) they use a Wokka, Puma and C-130J as jump platforms.
-
RAF Falcons confirmed
According to their webpage (https://www.raf.mod.uk/display-teams/falcons/) they use a Wokka, Puma and C-130J as jump platforms.
They do, however last time they were in NI (Newcastle 2014) they used a Sky Caravan
-
They also have a Dornier DO228,but I`m not sure if they use it for actual displays.
The RAF Falcons have been very unlucky with displays in NI over the years due to weather, lack of aircraft etc.
-
Still the usual stuff we're getting so far - nothing that hasn't been here before :(
-

Agreed, how about an invite to the Spanish Navy to send a couple of their AV-8B Harriers to display, before they retire them?

The last time i heard the term 'wokka', one landed in one of our fields about 20 years ago, regret not having the camera that day lol
-
aHuge update from Portrush.
RAF Red Arrows
RAF Typhoon
RAF Tutor
RAF BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane
Beech 18
DC3
Global Stars
Auto Gyro
Sea Fury
Catalina
Alongside the RAF flying programme, it has been confirmed that the Swiss Classic Formation will make its Portrush debut this year. This vintage trio will entertain the crowds with its unique brand of excitement created by the Beech 18 and DC-3 aircraft. The event will also feature the Global Stars aerobatic team, the Catalina sea plane, the Sea Fury and the Calidus Autogyro. And with more aircraft still to be confirmed it looks set to be an action packed two days on the Causeway Coast
-
All a bit meh TBH.
Newcastle looking to have the edge again this year, but won't lose sleep about missing either... Yet.
-
The DC3 has me sold on Portrush, just to hear that hmmm ;D
-
I'm surprised the BBMF are not sending the Dakota also to form 'Trenchard' formation, given Portrush is one of the major national 'RAF 100' airshows.
-
BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane confirmed for Portrush but only for the Sunday.
https://www.raf.mod.uk/display-teams/battle-of-britain-memorial-flight/displays/
-
Wildcats Aerobatics have confirmed Air Waves Portrush on their facebook page for both days.
-
Wildcat's are a pretty good display. Enjoyed them more than the Trig's Pitt Special team.
Aside from the DC3 & possibly the Sea Fury though I am unsure if there is anything I want to see.
-
Huey & Loach confirmed both day for Flying and Static displays.
-
Huey & Loach confirmed both day for Flying and Static displays.
Now there's a big surprise..! ::)
-
Oh good grief, not the "big surprise" carrot being dangled again. :-(
-
Looks like AYR display is getting an F18..being on the same day...would be a nice carrot :) Looks like all the other aircraft is gonna bounce between the 2 shows!!
Or was that sarcasm as in OMG not the Huey & Loach again and there is no surprise :(
AIRCRAFT
Swiss Airforce F/A-18C twin engined supersonic jet display
Royal Navy Sea Fury – World War 2 fighter
RAF Tutor aerobatic training aircraft
RAF Typhoon supersonic jet
Royal Air Force aerobatic team – The Red Arrows
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane
More to be announced ,,,
-
I note the Red Arrows are closing the Scottish Airshow with their display starting at 1630-that would suggest they will open the Portrush show, which may cause a mass departure after they are finished.
-
I quite like the Huey display, but it does seem very little difference this year aside from the DC3/Beech 18. Very on the fence on if I should go or not. I guess I will see what the weather is like. Global stars are good, but I've seen them quite a bit now.
One thing that surprises me is that this is meant to be an RAF100 official show but Newcastle is getting a lot more RAF support.
I think Portrush 2015 was the last time I said ' WOW I must get to this show' in regards to an NI show.
-
BBMF Lanc,Hurricane,Spitfire are confirmed BOTH days at Portrush.
Saturday 1st @ 1445.
Sunday 2nd @ 1230.
-
That's great news. Would make the trip up worth it to see the Lancaster on the Saturday.
-
The Mig 15 is on a poster in Portrush for Air Waves Portrush 2018.
-
The Mig 15 is on a poster in Portrush for Air Waves Portrush 2018.
Yeah, the Mig will be back apparently, just not announced yet.
With the RAF 100 and the one of the Vampires in 72 Squadron markings I am surprised it will be the Mig and not Vampires.
-
Yeah, the Mig will be back apparently, just not announced yet.
Great to hear!
Would be good if the Vampires came too
-
Air Waves Portrush
"Unfortunately the RAF are not offering a GR4 display this year. We did request a flypast by any RAF asset likely to be in the area but were not allocated anything. Although RAF flypasts are free getting additional display items also means we go into the next CAA fee bracket, at present that would add approx. £1500 to the costs."
"The Draken and Viggen heritage flight would be great too!!! 😁😁😁
Air Waves Portrush
"Sadly we don't have enough money in the flying display budget for that."
This was posted a few days ago so looks like Portrush won't be adding anything extra....2 kicks in one day :(
So Portrush being the premier RAF 100 event and the RAF cannot send 1 single asset...joke!
Should change Air Waves Portrush to Negative Waves
-
The comment was about adding a FLYPAST to the current list of RAF DISPLAY ITEMS at Portrush
-
I'm wondering why the official website for this event hasn't yet been updated with the list of aircraft attending? It's only just over a month away! I'm hoping that it's because the organizers are still consulting with aircraft operators in an effort to attract their attendance, so far I have heard very little about the aircraft coming but it appears that the RAF have little to offer us,🤔
-
Rumour that there is no Silver Wings enclosure this year, which would tally with the big empty space on that page of the website.
Someone is notable by their absence from the team this year.
-

Still more to be announced. This is a post from last week. I believe the Norwegian's are still to be announced, quite possibly the Mig 15 but not 100% sure on that one.
Visitors to Air Waves Portrush can also look forward to a debut performance from the vintage Swiss Classic Formation featuring the Beech 18 and DC-3 aircraft alongside appearances from the Global Stars aerobatic team, the Catalina sea plane, the Sea Fury and the Calidus Autogyro with more announcements still to come.

Thanks jasT1981but I'm still not getting as excited as I would be at this time most years! 😴

I've heard that too, which would make it seem like fact
-
Rich Goodwin down for Portrush http://www.richgoodwinairshows.com/airshows
-
There will be hospitality enclosures this year.
We have teamed up with our fabulous friends at Translink to offer a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children) the opportunity to win their train or bus travel and entry to Lancaster Lodge hospitality marquee on Sunday 2nd September. The Lancaster Lodge experience includes souvenir programme, hot and cold buffet, private viewing area and treats for the children.
-
Looks like the Royal Navy Wildcat is confirmed for Static Display for Both Days.
http://www.airwavesportrush.co.uk/on-the-ground/
-
I'm not a big fan of the wildcat. Horrible looking front end with that big dome camera.
-
Displays now confirmed.

- BBMF (Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane)
- RAF Tutor
- RAF Typhoon
- Auto Gyro
- Global Stars
- Navy Wings Sea Fury T20
- Wildcats Aerobatics
- Swiss Classic Flight (Beech 18 & DC3)
- Huey & Loach
- Catalina
- Ulster Gliding Club Glider
Saturday Only:
- Irish Coastguard S-92

Also an evening event on the Saturday in Portstewart which includes an Extra 330 & Piper J3 Cub evening display.
http://www.airwavesportrush.co.uk/portstewart-event/
-
Looks like I will go up for the Saturday. Swiss Classic Flight, Sea Fury, Huey & Loach, Catalina & BBMF the main draws for me.
-
Now, if I thought there was even the remotest possibility they'd do a Sea Fury/Mig 15 dogfight double formation...

Norah Patten, who is hoping to be the first Irish astronaut will be in the STEM village.

-
Ooooh now that is a nice formation!!
-
Pffft. I had a Sea Fury and Quiche formation at RIAT.
Given the jaunty angle it seems that it took effect quite rapidly.

If 'Logistical' issues allow for it, there should be a Puma HC1 on static from the UAS.
-
Confirmed that there will NOT be a Silver Wings enclosure this year, only the Lancaster Lodge 'corporate' enclosure where one can network with stakeholders...
-
And unfortunately it's location makes it totally unattractive if you want to see the airshow!
will have to harass any of the organisers I meet on the ground there, a big loss to the event
Confirmed that there will NOT be a Silver Wings enclosure this year, only the Lancaster Lodge 'corporate' enclosure where one can network with stakeholders...

How popular was Silver Wings? did it sell out each year?
-
How popular was Silver Wings? did it sell out each year?
TTF might know numbers but it always seemed fairly well booked every year, not many table-places free at lunchtime.
It's a real shame as I probably won't do the airshow without it.
The Lancaster Lodge isn't much more expensive per head but it's in a rubbish location.
-
How popular was Silver Wings? did it sell out each year?
Last year was my first visit to the enclosure and have to admit I did enjoy it. Prime spot, table and chairs provided, lunch, private toilets.
Was disappointed it wasn't returning this year as I probably would have gone again.
-
Low volume was the problem. Need a venue to take about 200 people before it breaks even. I think capacity was around 80 max.
-
So what's the weather going to be like next weekend?!!!!!! 🙄
-
The BBC are saying overcast 16C to 17C 15-20% chance of rain both days,Wind W or NW.I wonder will that change much over the coming week.
-
Would probably settle for that!
-
Lancaster's apparently gone tech this weekend. Hopefully she will be ready in time for next weekend.
Edit: Fixed and in the skies again already :)
-
So where would be the best place to go this year?
I went up to Ramore head car park last year but view was quite obstructed by a 2 story portable cabin I assume the flight control team were using. So I went down to the Beach near Village South. Was a good view but still preferred Ramore head car park area
-
Any news on timings and running order?
Here's hoping for decent weather
-
Barra Best has spoken !!
Looks to be same as last time.

Anywhere where you cant hear Tina Turner`s Greatest Hits blasting through the PA. :-)

Reds r opening show on Sunday ;D
-
Anywhere where you cant here Tina Turner`s Greatest Hits blasting through the PA.
Bah!
Timings for the weekend
WOOHOO!! Air Waves Portrush is nearly here. For those of you enquiring about timings the air show aerial display commences on Saturday at 13.20 and finishes at 17.00 with the BBMF appearing at 14.50 and the Typhoon at 16.50. Sunday's aerial display begins at 12.30 with the BBMF and finishes at 17.00 with the Poppy Drop. The Red Arrows will be appearing at 13.10 and the Typhoon 16.05. Look forward to seeing you there. All displays are subject to weather conditions and timings may be changed at short notice.
-
Super!
-
This will sound weird coming from me of all people... But I find it harder to get excited for the shows here now. Portrush still has some great aircraft I want to see (DC3, Huey, Sea Fury, BBMF & Catalina) and they do a great job putting a show together. However, since I started going across to England for shows like RIAT and Cosford its actually hard to get as excited as I once did for a seaside show.
-
Its go a bit stale now unfortunately, its the same line up year in year out.
Its a shame cause its a great location.
-
RIAT will pretty much ruin any other air show, although it itself it not what it used to be either.
-
I don`t see Richard Goodwin confirmed on the list in G-EWIZ--his display is one of the better ones.Any ideas?
-
Must not have made the final cut, his Portrush listing has been removed from his website.
He is one of the best civilian displays out there so its sad to see he won't be there. Always an exciting display.
Edit: UAS Puma on the road. Rumours up to 6 Aircraft on static.
Edit 2: BBMF Hurricane being used for displays this weekend has gone tech today.
Edit 3: BBMF Timings for weekend, based out of Scotland it seems.

Does anyone know if Reds are gasing up at Aldergrove on Sunday?
-
Does anyone know if Reds are gasing up at Aldergrove on Sunday?
I think that's doubtful - they are displaying at Prestwick both days so they'll probably come over from there on Sunday and head straight back there.
-
Based in Scotland. No NI stop over. Display and back to Scotland

Sunday 2nd September
- Depart from Prestwick – 12:54

XX308 Hawk T1 (Replica) has arrived at Portrush for Static according to the Airwaves facebook page
-
Will the heli`s be in the tennis courts? Any idea when they bring the helicopters in.Wouldnt mind seeing it and the Huey come in.
-
Last time I saw them come in (Huey, Loach and Sea King) was around an hour before the show started. But last year they were already there when I got up to Portrush.
-
I was thinking the same I looked up the airwaves website but it did not say anything about static displays this year. ???
-
Ulster Aviation Society heading up in force with the following items for static display in the East Strand Car Park:
Ferguson Flyer
Spitfire
Wessex
Tucano
Alouette
Puma may also be coming up
-
Puma was being prepped the other day for going up according to their FB. The UAS said about it going the weekend of Newcastle when I was talking to them.
-
Heli`s usually arrive early anytime between 10am and 12 noon. They may not want to mention static in the tennis courts as they have to keep Ramore Head closed off again.
Weather update from the BBC....Bring your winter gear and a hot water bottle, quilt or sleeping bag-it`s Portrush after all! :-)
Saturday:Thick cloud and a gentle westerly breeze, temp 16C-17C,a 15% chance of some light showers.
Sunday :Light rain and a S to SW fresh breeze,temp 17C-15C,a 20% chance of rain from 12 noon,increasing to 40%+ by 4pm.

Prop plane just flew over Portrush. Any idea what it was

Quite possibly one of the Wildcat Pitts Special? UFC posted their take off from Ards about 45 mins ago.
PSNI Carrickfergus trolling Portrush lol.
PSNI Carrickfergus

This weekend is the annual Air & Maritime show in Carrickfergus!
That’s not a typo, forget Portrush & their little glider fest, historic Carrickfergus is the main attraction.

Anyone any idea which Spitfire and Hurricane will be coming over assuming the Hurricane has recovered from its 'Tech' issues
Thanks :)

Will there be a gazelle up at the airwaves ?

Will there be a gazelle up at the airwaves ?
Huey & Loach plus Wildcat said to be coming to the Ramore Head Tennis Courts this year. There hasn't been a Gazelle up since 2015 if I am correct

Fingers crossed for decent weather guy's... The latest from the BBC looks OK for tomorrow but Sunday could be iffy especially later in the day.
-
I forgot to factor in a 6:30am start when I decided to go to Portrush :/
Have a good day if you're going up. I'll probably leave as the Typhoon comes in at 4:50pm for the train at 5pm. Not too bothered by the Typhoon. DC3, Huey, Sea Fury, Catalina & Lancaster is what I want to see.
-
Tennis courts a mess with. Construction material staff don’t know if anything is comin in and told me Ramore head will be opened for display... anyone confirm thisi. Same as last year staff no clue what’s goin on. Convinced nothin will be landing at tennis courts ... display line looks closer
-
Event organisers have said the helicopters are using the East Strand Carpark
-
Huey and Loach stuck I Kirkbride with weather.. 3 hour expected wait.
-
So no helicopters flying in? Thanks for the update jas
-
Wildcat coming in I think.. I'm. Still on the train though.
-
No S-92 today (coming tomorrow) and Mig cancelled.
-
BBMF cancelled to going by Air Waves Portrush FB page.
-
Just saw that :( bad weather in England
-
What aircraft are actually still coming?
Is it even worth it anymore?
-
Still got wildcats, dc3, sea fury, glider, beech 18, catalina, Typhoon global stars and auto gyro.. If the dc3 cancels ill probably head home.
-
dont think Sea Fury is on. post on FB of running order does not have it listed.
-
Wildcats 14.14 first display...who knows what may come after that 😩 global stars and Swiss classic and typhoon still on for now...Ulster glider and auto gyro that’s it for now.. tutor might make it later.. gonna be lots of big breaks..Catalina still on as well
-
Is the Sea Fury deff off the flying today?
-
The weather is actually very good in England today :- https://en.sat24.com/en/gb
Pretty much clear skies.
I have no time for Portrush (or Newcastle) anymore. Glad I didn't go.
-
No rain in Scotland either: https://en.sat24.com/en/gb/rainTMC
-
Fury went tech during the week... mig also went tech...fury 100% no show
-
The typhoons just displayed in Scotland... They have a live feed on their FB page if anyone is interested.
-
Bah! Hearing reports Tutor cancelled now too. Send us the vampires if Mig can't display lol
-
I'm over here on holiday and decided to stop by for the display. I'd forgot how bad the displays are here. It's clouding over and the wind is picking up. Time to head home!
-
Update on FB
The schedule for this afternoon will run as follows....Swiss Classic Fit at 15.46, Calidus Autogyro at 16.09, Global Stars at 16.22, Catalina at 16.37, Typhoon at 16.50 followed by Huey and Loach. Causeway Coast and Glens Events Visit Causeway Coast and Glens RAF Typhoon Display Team

After much consideration I decided to go up today, there were a few items of interest, and the forecast wasn`t too bad either for us,or Scotland/Northern England.
I arrived around 12.30,later than I usually would, town was crammed, but Ramore car park only half full at best. The area in front of the Tennis Courts has been demolished, and I noticed part of Ramore head seemed to be open.
Mrs AT texted me about the cancellation`s,so I set up camp briefly to get my breath back,I spoke to a few people and they confirmed what was happening,I left for home again after 20mins,and it seemed as if a lot of others where doing the same.I was not prepared to waste more time, and then hear more aircraft had to scrub their displays.
I also noticed that this year programme featured a photo of a RAF Harrier with the RAF 100 Red sticker on it--misleading I would say,as they were retired in 2011.
This will definitely be my last Portrush Airshow, unless sunshine is 100% and they get something worth seeing. The idea of teaming up with the Scottish Airshow at Ayr should have been a good one,but it has backfired again, because we are only getting some aircraft, and we are sharing their cancellations.
There is no Plan B from the organisers, aircraft are not arriving here on the Thurs,or Fri as they used to do-nearly all are operating from Scotland.
It seems really unfair to those who want to support their local show, and pay out for B+B`s,Hotels, rental of campers etc and travel up just to be bitterly disappointed year after year.
-
Think with Bournemouth Air Festival on the same weekend doesn't help as well :(
-
Unfortunately the weather is the luck of the draw, was at Radom in Poland last weekend for one of the biggest shows in Europe this year completely wrecked on the Sunday with low cloud and rain and Saturday was only marginally better.
So even if you do head for the big shows nothing is guaranteed.
Paul
-
S92 has just run over Ravenhill. I think I made the right choice.
-
Loach and Huey turned back !
-
Dakota low passes were fantastic.. That's really all I can say.
Multiple 30+ minute breaks killed the day, people were fed up.
-
Aldergrove with an entrance fee is the only really viable airshow option for Northern Ireland. Really, it is.
People need to pay up to see something good and I don’t are about this “it’s an operational airport so they can’t” argument. The RAF did great open days and the show could be held over that side of the airfield. The regular airliner departures would just add to the interest and keep things always flying.
Other busy city airspace’s and airports manage to do it. We need an airshow hosted at a runway where the aircraft can come and land. Either on the day or in the days before.
No teaming up with other events. That’s a money saving option that goes drastically wrong because the pilots simply cancel if they don’t get both their fees.
Conditions across the water today have been fine. They basically have the weather we had yesterday. The Irish Sea has some cloud cover, but come on, we’re not flying bi-planes here! It’s largely VFR throughout the UK and Ireland today with even VFR gaps in the Irish see that could have been routed through.
The no shows and pure and simple business decisions. Our airshows get stood up because of money. And not just today either. Pure and simple.
-
Need to get show back to an airfield so if suff goes tech or no shows then it's quick to get a fill in.
When I was helping out in ards it was normal to shift displays round.
You will always get more aircraft if you offer free fuel and food. We even replaced spark plugs for free one year on a zlin as pilot would of had to cancelled display. Can't do that if just a D&FO
-
Time to book my hotel for RIAT I think.
-
Don't know really what to say other than that was a poor poor flying display for an airshow😢
-
I think both NI seaside shows reached an aviation high and were found wanting by the money.
Portrush sold as much burgers, chips, candy floss & plastic dog poop today as it did in the years when F-16s and multiple Lancasters were gracing the bay and that's really all there is to it, Why spend on exotic aviation items when the autogyro will run up and down the strand for the price of the fuel and a steak dinner?. Wanna see 'planes? Go to an airshow, NI doesn't currently have one.
-
Random question do the organisers have to pay for the RAF stuff or is this seen as advert/recurrent for the RAF? Why I'm asking if the red's can display both days in Scotland why not here.

There were 3 airshows they were booked at this weekend. Bournemouth also had them today. There had been complaints Bournemouth were not getting big RAF displays like the Typhoon and Reds due to Portrush and Scotland always getting them, so I think a decision was made by the RAF to spread them out a bit because it was the RAF 100 year. If they came to portrush today, possibly would not have been able to do Bournemouth. (At least thats how it was explained elsewhere when the schedules came out)

Pretty much. It feels like they are getting complacent. The crowds still come regardless. Sadly for the likes of us, its a family festival and not for enthusiasts..

Disappointed to hear the show failed to live up to expectations but can't really say I'm surprised given previous years.
Every since I started going to airshows across the water, it's demonstrated just how inferior the shows here actually are. It's gotten to the point where I didn't even think twice about not going to Portrush this year, or Newcastle and its only 30 mins down the road. Anything they had of interest I had already seen in July (in much better conditions and at much closer range).
Once the organisers started going for quantity over quality then they lost a lot of the enthusiasts. For Joe Public its a chance to see the Red Arrows or a Typhoon, but enthusiasts want to see aircraft that under normal circumstances we wouldn't get over here.
There'll be the normal calls to move the show to an earlier date but that's not going to happen. The local traders want the show in September as it gives a boost to their season rather than have it in June or July.
Also agree that the show needs to move to an airfield to allow aircraft to land before, during and/or after displays. Again, not going to happen.
Personally I think Portrush reached its peak when they got the Belgian F-16 over and has been on the decline ever since, with the exception of the two Lancasters display.
Newcastle is also struggling but they are constrained as much by geography as by the weather.
-
2015 was a great year for Portrush
Reds
Typhoon
Vulcan
Strikemaster
Viggen
Sally B
Hawk T2 x2
Sea King
Also would have had Lancaster if there was no engine fire.
Contrast that to 2016 onwards and its a sharp decline. It's scary to think how much the dynamic of airshows have changed in just a few years for seaside shows here. One year we had Vulcans and Viggens, then the next few years RV7s, Pitts & Extra 300s
Edit: I'm probably being too harsh. I'm a bit cranky after a 7 hour round trip (travel time) to sit and see empty sky most of the day (12:30pm-5pm) with massive breaks in between displays. Left the hose at 7:50am and didn't get back until 9pm. Really wasn't worth it aside from the Dakota pushing the boundaries to the limit! lol He seemed quite close on the final few passes.
-
Whole heartedly agree Merlin. It’s a shame really, but all your points mirror my thoughts. I also didn’t give either show 2 seconds of my thoughts this year. They’ve become too predictably boring. Not even worth looking at the line up as you could have predicted it the day after last year’s show.
I’m going to have to get myself over to the big shows in England. I’ve never done one before. Just haven’t got like minded friends to go with. Do you guys generally travel over by yourselves and do you find it enjoyable doing so? My family really wouldn’t be interested lol!

I did run into a fellow forum member today (4th time this year I've ran into him!!) Didn't get to speak to him this time though.

Stayed the full day as my work colleague was doing stuff with the ulster aviation society so was nice to go down during intervals for a chat...the swiss formation was class but what annoyed me more was no info about the lansdown tennis courts..i always go down early for the flyins and such a shock that the tennis courts are a building site. So will the huey and loach do a static tomorrow and what about the navy helicopter.....I would pay to see a non seaside airshow in northern ireland and im sure a lot more people would pay as well.....loved the wildcats and the global stars were good...typhoon was so close around ramore this year but such a short display...but agree with the comments...2 displays went tech during the week and i find it hard to believe that with such a network there was lack of information. Will i go up tommor...depends on the scottish weather!!!! Need my spitfire and hurricane fix...a whole year is too long for a hit!!!
-
Argh... most of my photos came out grainy. Guess who forgot to check ISO settings? Had it set on 3200 for most of the show, only caught on towards the end.
-
I think there would be a demand for an airfield based/pay entry show here, possibly alternate years between Newtownards and Aldergrove, have it earlier in the season.
I`m not entirely sure why the Ards shows stopped, doubtless it was council funding or insurance related or finance of some sort. The shows always had a great mix of types and were well attended, the Ards business didn`t seem concerned about either as far as I am aware.
As mentioned earlier, any show can be affected by bad weather, but with Portrush it is almost always a problem, one way or the other.
With Northern Ireland`s strong aviation heritage we deserve better.
-
With the new CAA rules around airshows and built up areas I don’t think there will ever be an airshow at Ards.
-
Backup for day 2 windy but nice so far

Falcons cancelled.
-
Eurofighter up the north coast now.
-
Looks like the Lancaster got her issues sorted. Up over Manchester now after doing a few loops around the town of Lancaster.
-
Yes, good show for what there was, il certinly be back but, unless there is a big headline act, im afraid i heard others in the crowd say they wont be back for it.
-
Now my crankiness has subsided I did enjoy what I saw yesterday. Global Stars and Wildcats were good and the DC3/Beech 18 was fantastic. Especially the DC3 low passes of the beach. Always good to see the Catalina too.
The main issue was the big long gaps. I know that was down to so many cancellations but as said there was no plan B. Newcastle actually had a few displays on standby this year just in-case. Chipmunks and I believe Team Raven were on standby. I was getting pretty fed up standing around with nothing going on after such a long trip up.
Trading stalls seemed to be very low this year, only a handful down on the grass in village south, not sure what village North was like, but compared to last year it was very empty. The good thing was though a lot of the stalls were aviation related. Some great models I had to resist buying. Sadly the stall selling them for £2.50 the last few years wasn't there.
Portrush is pretty easy (all be it long) to get to via the train. I have to leave the house at 7:50am to get there for just after 12. Doing that both ways is tiring. It will take something impressive to bring me back next year though.
Static display was good. UMVC had a good lot at it along with the UAS. The one thing I will say is for an official RAF 100 event it didn't seem like there was much RAF 100... Newcastle was far better in that respect.
Back to RIAT for me next year I think after missing this years.

Could not agree more sitting around for hours to see 1 display to then wait another 45 minutes to an hour for the next. Some old boys and girl just can't do it anymore.

never mind the old boys and girls, my 2 boys could just about keep themselves contented lol

Considering the weather-related issues, todays show wasn’t bad. However, even the kids remarked that it was the same as last year. Always like the Red Arrows and Eurofighter but would love to see more jets (or even civil aircraft such as Airbus/Boeing’s etc). To be honest, we’ve been up three years on the trot now but unless there’s something good and different next year, we’ll be giving it a break for a while. That said, well done to all who organise and manage the show each year - it’s still very good but just needs a few changes in terms of aircraft displaying to keep it interesting.

Did Red 10 arrive by road today rather than heli?
-
Falcons dropped him off. Well not literally.
-
Even though today was better I think overall the airshow has definitely lost it's spark for the past few years it's been basically the same thing over and over. I'm not having a go at the organisers as I'm sure their hands are tied with budgets etc and I'm sure they are as disappointed as the rest of us when an aircraft goes tech or the weather plays havoc with the schedule.
Overall for the towns of Portrush, Portstewart and Joe public looking for a day out the show will be considered a success going by the amount of people in the area the past few days.

I think he arrived by helicopter around 12. I don't think he departed till late afternoon though? On a side note, the new Red 10 would need to be a little more active on Twitter. Mike Ling still tweets the odd bit of info and it's great, but the new guy just seems to retweet what the main Red Arrows account puts up and not much else.
-
The heli at 12ish was EC20 EI-FAB. It departed about 17:30 in horrendous rain.

For those who went on Sunday, what type of display did the Reds do? I am assuming it would have been flat or rolling and not the full display due to weather?

Flat Display.

Thanks, thought it would be that.

I wonder how this could affect Portrush next year. The Scottish show, normally at Ayr could be moving to Kirkcaldy on the East coast of Scotland as Ayr won't be hosting in it 2019. Talk of a possible date change too stating 'Between June & September'

Oh dear, what a badly researched piece of junk this article is.Pictures of the Vulcan? Leuchars and St.Andrews unusuitable? St.Andrews has West Strand Road which would be a good viewpoint/venue,but it`s right beside the golf course.
RAF Leuchars as it used to be held huge Battle Of Britain airshows until the RAF left in 2014,it is now an army base.
Plenty of room for aircraft to land if they wanted to go down that route and have a static display as well.I`m not sure what the status of the runways is at Leuchars, but I think they still have a UAS presence there.
Kirkcaldy does have a nice straight promenade, but that`s about it,it`s probably a little too close to Edinburgh air traffic as well.

Leuchars would be perfect, I was at many a show there and the QRF North is moving there next summer while Lossie is worked at so runways must be kept operational.
Good public transport facilities too with the railway station and the base is massive for statics.
-
I think what they're looking at here is the freebie element of the show, rather than the on-station.

Yeah, well that`s true enough, but I just thought it was daft to rule Leuchars out, maybe the MOD aren`t keen, who knows.
