Well I spent some time with Hammerhead on Ramore Head and it was so windy I found it hard to keep the lens steady. To be honest the only decent shots I got were of the Merlin and Sea King taking off from the tennis courts. I also have to say that I was a disappointed not to have seen the A380 in the flesh - what I mean by this is that my eye was to the view finder the whole time, I didn't once put the camera down to take it in.

Also was disappointed by the number of no shows - Spitfire, Hurricane, Gnats etc.

Have to agree on the windy conditions, it was quite tough on black rocks as well. Yea didnt realise the number of no show until I sat down and went through the programme!

But all said and done we did get to see the A380! I did manage to bring the camera down for a sec or two just to take it in and it is awesome no matter what way it comes in for just sheer bulk.

Dissapointed with jects for distance etc i know safety concerns an all, but how is it managed a the airshows at airports are they closer?

Anyone going back tomorow?

Like Casper said the wind on Ramore was a real challenge as it was really gusting and when a good shot was lined up it was hard to keep the Len's pointed in the right direction.....having said that i was really happy with where i was and got some good shots of really close action... the Reds were a real bonus for me as this was the third time i was at a show with them this year and this is the only one where i got to see a full display.... pics will follow after i get some coffee in my system as i have been up since half 4 getting ready and then 7 hours total on the road has left me somewhat lacking energy at the moment for some strange reason... ::)

Great day at the show yesterday, got home tired but happy. Spent the day on Ramore head and I'm sure I seen loads of you guys with all your hardware. Wind was very strong (25-30 Knots) and we found that if you sat 5-6 feet from the cliff edge the wind blew up and right over your head (much warmer). Highlights were obviously the A380, Euro and the Arrows but also spectacular was the beach landing by the Glider (at about 6pm the piper flew back, landed on the Beach and towed him off again, all during High Tide).
Looking forward to all the great Photo's that you guys have taken and hopefully I'll have a decent camera by next year.

All in all not a bad two days considering weather conditions, I drove from Antrim both days, took 1.5 hours to get home last night!. Enjoyed all the aircraft , A380 was impressive as were the Red Arrows as always but was really impressed by the glider display. Had an interesting conversation with some of the Ulster Aviation Society guys, shame about the circumstances regarding visits to the collection, but perhaps a fantastic addition to the collection  towards the  end of September! (Sorry guys, do not want to divulge what the addition will be incase it was told in confidence) Would encourage any one to join the society, and no, I have no affiliation to the society whatsoever !.

I really wish organisers of airshows here in NI would think about scheduling them for late May. It is often very nice weather in late May (as this year proved with 26c and clear skies).

You only have to think back to the airshow in Newtownards, when they had it for VJ day in May 2004 (the year the Lynx was doing the backflips). The weather was fantastic and I got sunburnt look up in the sky so much!

Realistically, late May is the only time you can be fairly sure of good conditions. Almost every year sees a settled spell at the end of May.

Unfortunately, the Ards airshow almost always was in June when the weather was usually rubbish. The last show was a prime example of this.

I say, if you're gonna have an airshow in NI then make sure it is in late May!

It is difficult to schedule I'm sure, however if you look at the North West 200 this year, it was  abandoned for rain! and it was on the 16th May this year.

I personally believe it will always be a "suck it an see" kind of event because weather here in the North as we all know is unpredicatable.

Yes there are months when it is fairer than others, but even though yesterday and Saturday were not sun splittin the stones weather it was the spectacle that drew the multitudes to it even in the bad weather.

If you also consider the number of events in the UK and the flying hours of the aircraft, there are only so many that can be fittend in in the good months and because Portrush is a newer event then it is fitted in around the longer established events.

Anyway I'm off my soap box now and please anyone reading this do not take offence, I too would like better weather for better pics (no sunburn though as I'm a baldie), but maybe one day get to go to the Dubai air show!

Hi All,

I hope those that made it to the north coast for the airshow had a good time despite the conditions.  I was on Ramore Head on Saturday, quite close to where the guys were setting up for the evenings fireworks display.  Although the wind was mental I was joined by another couple of photographers who I know from the motorcycle scene.  Apologies for not catching up with some of the other guys on the hill but not knowing most of you visually made it rather difficult.  As well as trying to take photographs in a howling gale, I was also trying to keep an ear on the scanners which was no mean feat either as the wind was so strong it kept removing the ear piece from my ear.  Thankfully in the afternoon we were treated to some interesting comms from the eight F-16’s of the Texas ANG as they routed to LKCV.  'Trend 71-78' came through MIMKU direct LUK with their tanker 'Cacti 21', boom frequency was 254.600 with the chicks working 140.150 for air to air comms.  ATC was with Scottish Military on 282.625.  It’s just a pity the flight couldn’t have went through the overhead at Portrush, even holding their ALTREV it would still have been a great sight.

On the Sunday I headed to the other side of the bay sitting just below Blackrock.  Although it was much calmer in comparison to Saturday this time it was the rain which spoilt the photography and I ended up taking very little shots, spending more time playing with the scanners.  Frequency wise there was very little difference from the list I posted of last years activity.  A circuit which eluded me this time was Select Security so if anyone managed to snag it I would be interested to hear what they worked this year.  Anyway on to the updated list for 2009.

Great day out yesterday despite the weather ... just home about 3 hours ago and no sign of any pneumonia symtoms yet ! stayed in Crawfordsburn last night .. really wanted the missus to see a full REDS display for the first time ( seen it many times myself ) but the TYPHOON was a first for me and more than made up for the lack of the synchros etc. Many thanks for all the useful info on this site re. travel / parking / scanner freqs. and best viewing positions. Was up on Ramore for the important stuff ! (JETS ) Look forward to next year and will defo be back.  Tremendous shots posted so far. Many thanks again ... ChopperMike.

I did ;D I saw it within literally 10 seconds of opening the programme.

Casper, the fact you had the photo credited to NIaviation rather than your name just hows how much dedication you put into making this site what it is! Kudos! I'm glad to be apart of this ever growing site.

 :goodjob: On a lighter note I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Tango Tango Fanta and his collegues for organising yet another brilliant show. Despite the weather I thoroughly enjoyed myself and am already looking forward to next years show. I'd also like to thank TTF for all the updates he has posted over the last few months and for letting us know about the Airbus way before anyone else :) Way above and beyond the call of duty :) :goodjob:

Hi folks and thanks for the comments. A few points to come back on:

Weather - we hold the show on the first weekend of September because it would normally be a "dead" weekend. The airshow has always been an event marketed to families, rather than hardcore spotters, and has established itself as the busiest weekend of the year. May-August weekends are pretty busy anyway so the marginal increase in visitors would be less than for a weekend in September. NI weather is a mystery - note the high pressure coming in tomorrow and as for the suggestion about May, I have worked the Raft Race for 5 years running and it has been sunny twice, rainy twice and literally gale force on one occassion. Three of the last four NW200s have been wet or showery. Scheduling does have to integrate with the UK calendar and we've now got ourselves a cosy wee slot in terms of availability.

No-shows - I don't agree that Portrush seems to suffer more than most other shows. Vampire went tech on Thursday, BBMF (except Dak) didn't even leave the hangars in Connigsby because of their weather conditions, spoke to Gnat owners this morning (they went tech on Friday and were repaired by Sat afternoon but too late to make slot at Portrush), 2nd Mk4 Sea King went tech at Aldergrove, no info on Dukes of Cassutt (they were replaced by 2 Yaks by Friday evening), Largs Bay stuck in port with electrical problems.
None are reasons specific to the display location - any no shows were due to weather elsewhere or tech reasons.

Love the pics by the way - I was thinking on the day that b&w shots would look great.
