Moon shots
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:20:14 AM »
It is inevitable that anybody who owns a camera, tries taking a photo of the moon to see just how close they can get. Post your moon shots!

Nice shot. Don't think my lens will have that much of a reach but I'll give it a go.

Yea, you really need a crystal clear night for a moon shot but a tripod isn't neccessary. I bought a cheap tripod for £10 off ebay but it's so light and unsteady that I've never actually used it, not even for moon shots.  >:( The window ledge does me, no need for biscuit tins :)

I took a few shots these evening, but it was so darn cold I couldn`t stop shaking-if any good ones I will post them up.

Just went out and took 30 or so shots (great thing about digital) at various exposure and shutter speeds.

Here are two for starters-Still can`t see no Lunar Rover ;D

Do you use a tele-converter aswell Angry or are those taken with your 500mm lens?

I tried a couple last night too but even at full zoom (300mm) i can't manage that level of detail.

Great pics by the way lads - nice crater detail 8)

Nope-no teleconverter;just the 500mm lens.

I have used teleconverters in the past with 35mm but found the loss of quality is too high.

This one is well, not exactly cheating, but is using a little bit more equipment than just a Digital SLR.
It was taken at prime focus through a Meade LX200GPS Scope, and is actually built up from 9 different images.

Fantastic photo. It's immense to see such crater detail! Congrats and thanks for sharing :)

Whilst talking about moon shots, has anyone ever tried long exposure star shots. I saw one shot where the camera was aimed at the north star and a 30 minute exposure was taken. The result was just amazing. I will see if I can find the picture

I have a couple of exposures taken with a f1.4 50mm lens of the milky way, taken from a VERY dark place down near Downpatrick - amazing detail - i'll post them over the week-end after I find them.

Nice one, I look forward to seeing those shots.

I looked everywhere for the photography thread where I had seen the star spiral photo but could'nt find it anywhere so this photo will have to do. I found it off flickr. Such a cool effect.

A one hour exposure! impressive. I'm not sure how far my camera can go, I think it's only 15 minute exposures! Imagine, one small nudge of the camera would ruin the photo.

These were taken at Castle Ward Co. Down, during 'Mars Watch' in 2005, and incredibly dark place.

The first one really shows how many stars there are out there, even though you can't normally see them due to ambient light.

The second is the Pleiades and Mars

The last one, taken of the milky way, you can just spot the Andromeda Galaxy at the bottom right of the picture.

Nice one abyzz, those are some great shots!  :) The only star related things I can identify is Orions belt, I'm not too good with the rest of them!

Several years ago on a family holiday in Donegal, there was a much hyped week where the Earth passed through a comets debris path. In Donegal we were lucky enough to get a clear night in the pitch darkness and we saw 200+ shooting stars in one night. I wish I had been in to photography back then! We were lucky to have a load of family relatives with us so there was about 20 of us standing in the cottages front garden staring at the sky during the night.

Would that have been in August by any chance?

There is a fairly regular metor shower that passes over most of Western Europe mid August.
I have seen it a few times, and in Italy around Rome they actually have a Festival to cellebrate it.
I think it is in relation to St.Lorenzo who had a monastary in the hills around Piglio two hours drive to the West of Rome.Beautiful place. :D

Very simple - a f1.4 50mm prime lens on my Canon DSLR.
Varying exposures from 8 to 20 seconds ( tripod'ed of course )
