I was thinking about how we as a group could raise extra money for the airshow if indeed it will be on next year.Just to make it a bit easier for them to get extra fund without asking sponsors for a bit more.

Some interesting footage indeed. The Corsair must have been from one of the earlest shows.

As far as money for the show is concerned would it not be possible to charge to see the show? I always park in the East Strand carpark and it would be so easy to charge a set fee going into the carpark. As others have said anyone with an interest in it will happily pay £10 or more to see it.

Problem is that it's an urban setting not an enclosed airstrip - parking is free in Portrush all year round and people will always try to park for free. There was a paying car park set up 5mins walk from the venue and got ONE vehicle over the 2 days! People were happy to walk up to a mile to avoid paying £5 for the whole family.

Disscussion about the Airshow on Radio Ulster this afternoon-might be worth a listen.

I don`t recall a Corsair at Portrush and I have been to every show they have had ??? .

Can`t view the footage on this PC,but maybe it was from Newtownards? They had Corsair before.

There never was one in Portrush - I think it must be stock footage.

So the programmes sold well last year but very little money from them went towards the show itself. Were we not being asked to buy one to contribute to this years show?

I  think the programmes are made for the brittish legion and they give only a small percentage towards the airshow they get the rest for the poppy appeal. I do think that the council have had plenty of time to figure out how they could raise extra cash for the airshow.

Re. programmes - Didn't quite hear that bit - somebody came into the room. Programmes were £5 and the sellers got 75p per copy. That covers collection, distribution and selling by a team of about 90 people. The organisers just don't have a team that size to do programme sales.

it was Mr Brownhutt that said the programmes are for the brittish legion.

As been mentioned I would happily pay £10-£15 to see the show, but the Town setting would make it very difficult to collect an admission fee.
I would estimate that only 10-15% of the crowd actually have any  interest in aviation, the rest to just come along because the show is free;and most just come to see the Red Arrows.
We have all witnessed the mass hurried evacuation after the Arrows have displayed ::)

Geoff Brownhutt didn`t seem too impressed when asked why the programmes are given away free-they are £5.00 each and most of the money goes to the British Legion.

It didn`t sound like Mr Brownhutt held out much hope for a show next year, and I`m think he may well be correct.
Once a an airshow gets "dropped",they very rarely reappear, and with the current economic climate I doubt Portrush will be the only airshow casualty. :'(

The supposed contribution of £70-80,000 put up by the Council does`t sound that much considering the economic benefit it brings to the area.

I think the whole cancellation thing stinks-I really feel the Council should/could have done more to ensure the show went ahead even if it was just a smaller event this year.

Council does not run the NW200 - it is run by Coleraine and District Motor Club who would make any decisions like that.

Shame the show couldnt be ran for just one day, would surely still bring in the crowds over the weekend, if the stalls and static was set up on sat with the show on Sunday.
One thing that did annoy me during the itnerviews was the chamber of commerence etc saying how much it would hurt the local businesses, yet they arnt willing to donate money towards funding ? You cant expect council to pay for absolutely everything, the people making the most noise about what a blow this is are the same ones who would run a mile if asked to fund it !

I don't think they could increase their sponsor money by the amount they needed to help this year. one store in particular had said they would consider the proposal but just counldn't justify such an icrease in sponsor money. E.G morrellis.

I have spoken to a number of business owners in Portrush & Coleraine whom have sponsored the show last year, the council have not even asked them if they would contribute this year

All of them said that they would happly sponsor and increase their contribution to save the show.

This decision was taken behind closed doors without any consultation with the local Chamber of commerce or these previous sponsors.

:Welcome: Hi Dave and welcome to the forum :)

I think we may never hear the 'real' reason for the cancellation, all we can do is hope that the show returns next year.

AFAIK any charge would have to be for either parking, entry to paddock or for program (all of which they, the Coleraine & District club,  already do), as to charge for entry to public road events requires a special dispensation/order from the government, and I think only the Ulster Grand Prix at the Dundrod circuit can do this at present.
I could be wrong on this but I think that is the case, so the same may apply to public space used for spectating at the air show.

Thanks, I just been made aware of the forum.

There is a considerable groundswell of opposition to this decision and how it was decided.

We have been in touch with local Councilors and MLA's in an effort to have it overturned.

Any help, suggestions or advice would be welcome

The MLA's could forego their pay-rise this year.

That'll more than cover CBC's contribution. In fact it would probably pay for a 'bigger and better' airshow.
